How to serve/what to put on challah bread?!
We're having a "food day" for my Jewish American Lit discussion today and I'm not sure what else to bring. I don't have a knife to cut the bread with, but isn't challah usually torn when served on the sabbath because the act would symbolize violence otherwise? I've never actually eaten any before and wasn't sure if it is usually served with butter, jam, or on its own? Butter might be a problem because it'd be sitting out for a while, but if necessary I could try to make it work. I didn't want to simply show up with the bread alone if it'd seem odd or wouldn't taste very good alone. Any advice is very much appreciated.

It's torn just out of custom; seems to taste better that way! There is nothing wrong with using a knife to cut it--in fact, there are some very beautiful challah knives that one can buy (see link below).
As to what to put on it--honey, jam butter (or margarine or butter substitutes) are commonly used. I use all three.

it is usually torn, and how bout peanut butter.
You could tear it up and put some jam on it. How about Cheeze Whiz?
