I wanna make a dinosaur cake, which icing should I use?!

He lives a three hour train journey away, so I can't use buttercream icing, because even if it goes hard in the fridge over night, it'll just thaw on the train and be all messy. I can't use corn syrup because not sure where to buy it. I'm afraid of food poisoning from egg whites and I've heard people say that its too eggy.
Are you able to colour royal icing? Or do you buy it ready to roll? Because I need to colour it.

I have used buttercream icing and taken it on a 6 hour car trip. Just let it set out uncovered so that it dries out some, it will get a crusty fill to it but it will be fine .
