Fish gone off- ammonia smell?!

Question: Fish gone off- ammonia smell?
I'm following a recipe and it said to cook the cod in a little butter and milk in the microwave on high power. When i opened microwave got a really strong smell like ammonia - not cooked fish in microwave before. Does it sound like it has gone off? Bought from tesco yesterday - dated use by 11th (today)

Answers:

Fish from supermarkets need s to be cooked on day of purchase and also remember that if it came off a shelf prepacked some idiots take it put in their baskets take it on a long tour of the shop.
then change their mind and the replace it back on the shelf for some body else to purchase.
so the bacteria have had a chance to warm up and reproduce in the product.
Whoopee Instant stomach problems!
Better by far to buy fish from a good local fish monger

And I should just add do you check your fridge or/and freezer are operation at the correct Temperature as this can be the cause of food spoiling.
Buy a good fridge or/and freezer thermometer and check your temperature's regularly

I once went to cook some fish we'd just shopped for that night to cook for dinner. Upon opening the package, the smell of ammonia hit me right in the face! My husband took it right back to the store. He told them it smelled like ammonia, the manager started to open the bag-same bag they bagged it up in-and gave him his money back!

To answer your question:

Simply put - raw, fresh fish should have 'no' oder at all. When in doubt,do not purchase it. You will definitely will have a 'fish' oder when baking or broiling, but that is normal.

Ammonia smell is a sign of rotting fish. Don't eat it.
Supermarket dates are a good guideline, but trust your nose first. The date can be off if the food isn't handled and stored properly, or if it is accidentally or intentionally mislabeled.

Hey I see you are interested in preparing good tasting food. I was that way until
a friend of mine inform me to rely more on cooking recipes. Since that time I have been
able to prepare some fantastic meals for my guests.

It's gone bad. Why did you buy an item on the 10th that was marked to discard by the 11th? Not even 24 hours later? I wouldn't touch it, let alone eat it.

It will probably be ok, but I wonder when it was packed and how it had been stored.
I would call Tesco and complain, they may replace it.
If in doubt, chuck em out

Gross! throw it out it sounds bad Poison.

sling it i would.Best be on the safe side.
