It does depend a little on what sort of cake it is and also the type of pan.

Some metal pans are coated with teflon or other non-stick and if yours is then that may save you. Other pans that have been used for a long time also gain their own non-stick properties and if that is the case then you may also be saved.

If your cake is a scratch baked cake (ie not from a packet) and has quite a lot of butter in it then you are also on the route to having some success. I can't tell you what may happen if it is a packet cake as I'm not so familiar with those, but you may find that if it is quite rich it will release.

Now... once you take all those factors into account then there are things that you can do that will make this process easier anyway.

1. Make sure your cake is fully baked before removing it from the oven. Most cakes will shrink back from the sides of the pan once they are fully cooked.

2. Do not let the cake go completely cold in the pan. When the cake is completely cold any fat that may have helped with the release will have solidified again, and also the sugars. So cool the cake for no more than 10 minutes in the pan before turning it out onto a rack.

3. Run a thin knife or spatula around the edge of the pan before you try to tip the cake out. Place your rack or board on top of the pan and then flip the whole lot. Tap all over the bottom of the pan - not too hard but make sure you've given it all a bit of a nudge. Depending on the height of the cake versus the height of the pan you may actually hear it release and plop onto your board. Lift off the tin.

And now for the magic part... any bits that have stayed in the tin can be replaced on the bottom of the cake while it is still hot and will sometimes kind of stick. But also... place another wire rack or plate or similar on the bottom of the cake and once again tip the whole thing over... now the bit that may not be so perfect is on the bottom and you can ice the top which didn't get stuck!

I know it's a novel but hopefully it helps. Good luck!

Unfortunately, I'm 90% sure your cake will not come clean out of the pan. You live and learn. I made the same mistake with brownies once... I had to scrape it out. However, I tossed some of the broken brownie bits in a bowl, added a scoop of vanilla ice cream and it looked really delicious (and it was). Maybe you could do something similar? If not, another cake mix is anywhere from $.75 to a couple dollars... Inexpensive mistake. Hopefully you didn't make this one from scratch! Good luck!

Without it not being greased it more than likely will not come out of the pan. Maybe you can take a spatula & gently get it out.

Maybe...depends no the cake pan.

most likely it will be stuck and good! cut it into cubes or something to make parfaits with.
