How to make boxed red velvet cake more moist?!

Question: How to make boxed red velvet cake more moist?
Is there anything I can add or take away to make boxed red velvet cake more moist? I've never made it before but a lot of boxed cakes and cupcakes turn out dry for me even if I do everything exactly like it says.

Answers:

A true red velvet cake, in my opinion should be make from scratch, not a box. Found this yesterday and I am looking forward to trying it! :D

If your cakes are dry, you are overbaking!! Especially chocolate cakes. Even ones made from recipes will be dry and nasty if overbaked.

Set timer for at least 5 minutes less than called for minimum baking time. Check with tooth pick to center of cake to see if it is still batter or not. If the toothpick is a bit moist or oily, it is done, if there is batter on the toothpick bake a little longer. Watch carefully.

You can use Mayonnaise, about half to 3/4 cup to make any cake mix more moist in addition to the ingredients already called for.

Have you checked the accuracy of your oven? Get an oven thermometer at the cookware notions aisle. Set it in the oven center and set oven to temp called for. Let oven heat for 20 minutes and then you will know if oven is accurate temperature. Some are not even new!!

Try adding applesauce to the recipe.

If you don't mind I'd like to offer some unsolicited advice. You really could make cakes from scratch that not only taste better but don't contain all that partially-hydrogenated oil or high fructose corn syrup. Once you have all the ingredients cakes made from scratch are usually cheaper too. There are literally thousands of recipes online and most of them can be made by a ten year old. I grew up eating processed convenience foods but learned to cook and bake as an adult. I'll never go back to the boxed junk.

Add a dry package of pudding to your mix. You can find pudding mix in the dessert section at the grocery store where the boxed cake mixes are. Use any that you like. I would use vanilla or chocolate.

If you are using a boxed cake mix, it probably already has the pudding in it. Do not add another. Read the ingredients on the box.

Cook them for less time

try 90% of the recommended time

You can also make a number of small holes in the top of a cake, mix a little hot water cognac and honey and pour that over the top of the cake and leave it for a few hours

Add more oil - about 1/4 cup more then the recipe calls for or another egg.

Add one more egg than in the instructions. Mayonnaise works also.
