Is olive oil a good substitute for butter?!

Question: Is olive oil a good substitute for butter?
I'm trying to make garlic mushrooms but i am trying to not use butter. Or should I just lessen the butter then add more olive oil?

Yes, you can, although it depends how hot you are going to cook your mushrooms. The thing to watch about olive oil (as with most vegetable oils) is that you do not overheat it. As a matter of interest I recommend looking up the Wikipedia page on oils and fats. Here the relevant bit on temperatures:

Oils that are suitable for high-temperature frying (above 230 °C/446 °F) because of their high smoke point

* Avocado oil
* Corn oil
* Mustard oil
* Palm oil
* Peanut oil (marketed as "groundnut oil" in the UK)
* Rice bran oil
* Safflower oil
* Sesame oil (semi-refined)
* Soybean oil
* Sunflower oil

Oils suitable for medium-temperature frying (above 190 °C/374 °F) include:

* Almond oil
* Rapeseed oil (marketed Canola oil or, sometimes, simply "vegetable oil" in the UK)
* Ghee, Clarified butter
* Cottonseed oil
* Grape seed oil
* Lard
* Diacylglycerol (DAG) oil
* Olive oil (Virgin, and refined)
* Walnut oil
* Mustard oil

Unrefined oils should not be used for frying, but are safe for simmering.

The article is marked up as controversial, but in your case I would chose the one which you find tastes best! I know I prefer butter any day, but YMMV! Enjoy!

Wikipedia

Anytime I cook a meal that calls for butter (once a month max), I use the Smart Balance "butter"/olive oil mix. They're sticks in the regular butter section of the supermarket. This stuff would be perfect for a garlic mushroom dish. :)

You can use oil but it won't taste as good :-)

there is no substitute for butter, but you could use less butter and some olive oil, like you mentioned..

Your choice. I would use a combination since you do have some butter on hand

olive oil is the best make the food taste Amazing
