Take it out of the refrigerator and let it get soft until it is spreadable.

It means exactly that: the butter is the same temperature as the room. As the butter sits at room temperature, it will begin to soften.

When I bake a cake that requires a frosting with room temperature butter, I take the butter out of the refrigerator 6 hours before I'm going to use it. Then there is no question.

If you can't wait, you can beat the butter (keep it wrapped) with a rolling pin until it is softened.

they want the butter to the point where it's soft enough to mash up but not melting or dripping because the state of the butter actually affects the quality of the food

think of it almost as "lukewarm"

Butter not straight out of the fridge but some butter that has stood in a room for a while so its not cold and hard to spread :)

Nuke it fo 20 sec, and move on the the next step.
I realy wanted to say some thing smart here, but I will leave it alone :)
Good luck & keep cooking.

it means to leave it out for a while, like an hour, so its soft and you can work with it
