Is raw fish for sushi good for you?!

Question: Is raw fish for sushi good for you?
The only sushi I eat is a California Roll. It doesn't have anything raw in it except vegetables, and I don't know about the crab meat. I was thinking of trying the sushi that has the fish over top of the rice wrapped with seaweed, except I don't know if it can make your stomach sick or anything but it looks mouth-watering. Sushi eaters or raw fish eaters, is it safe?

yes it is good for you

Raw fish (sashimi/sushi) prepared by a professional sushi chef is perfectly safe and has a clean, delicate, light taste.

Sushi can be really good for you, If you stick to traditional style sushi it can be a nutritional powerhouse. The best sushi and fish to look for are Salmon and Tuna. These are oily fish and contain omega 3 fatty acids and lots of nutrients. The best rolls to go for are Salmon Roll, Avocado Roll and Cucumber Roll. Try and eat sushi with nori or seaweed as this contains iodine and many other healthy minerals.

Contrary to popular belief fish is not pulled out of the ocean and sliced for sushi and served.

All fish for sushi has been prepared so that it does not contain parasites. How? It is frozen. Freezing kills anything in the flesh of the fish that you (or the restaurant, or the FDA) wouldn't want you to eat.

Once the flesh has been frozen it is very slowly and gently thawed. Then it is sliced for sushi at sushi restaurants.

Raw fish is really no better or worse for you. People eat sushi for the flavors and the experience. There aren't a jillion sushi restaurants around the U.S. because it is bad for you.

By the way, the "crab" in your California roll is likely to be the fake crab you can buy at the market which is typically a combination of white fish and some red food coloring on the edge to make it look like crab. If it is real crab (which is not traditional in a California roll) the crab is cooked.

If you are a first timer I would recommend you try a Spicy Tuna Roll. It will change your sushi-loving life

the cali roll isnt even really sushi, its makki, its a roll, sushi is nigiri, which is the raw fish slices on top of the rice, and yes it is good for you, good amounts of protein and omega 3s which is great for your health, the rice has carbs but you can do a ton worse then eating sushi, plus the wasabi that is smeared on the fish is there to kill any bacteria, and if you mix a little of the wasabi in soy sauce and dip it(which i suggest) cuz it tastes awesome it will kill any concern of bacteria.

As long as you see other people eating it, and it is a clean and kept-up place, your stomach should be fine.

Eating raw fish is not significantly better or worse for you than eating cooked fish (barring of course the butter or oil that fish may have been cooked with). There is a higher chance that raw fish will have bacteria in it, because cooking kills bacteria. That being said, I have been eating sushi for 15 years and I have never gotten food poisoning from it.

Sushi is the best!

Hi Black and Yellow....

I'm with you.. I only eat California Roll. I have many friends who eat raw fish and absolutely love it. But.. I come from a long line of fisherman and once when cooking white fish (we caught ice fishing) we observed a few parasites (looked like flukes) wiggling out of the cooking fillets. That was ENOUGH for me.

I'm sure we ALL eat a lot of nasty things that we never know about in processed and unprocessed foods...but for me... I'm cooking the meat (of any kind) that I eat. We once cut into a Butterball turkey that had a large abscess deep in it's breast meat when we cut into it at Thanksgiving. It was an UN-NORMAN ROCKWELL MOMENT. I was utterly mortified... threw the entire thing OUT.

I have heard that knocking back some Sake is a good way to kill any cooties in raw fish...but I don't care for Sake either....LOL Not sure you want to read this...but...here you go...

The fish that sushi restaurants use is different from what you get in the grocery store. Most of it is flash frozen and handled in a manner that kills harmful bacteria. Sushi or sashimi grade if you want the technical term. You'll be fine.

I eat a lot of sashimi :)

Sushi (Sashimi) is fine. I have been eating it, making it at home, and fishing for it for 20 years and my cholesterol levels are very low and my heart functions are good for someone half my age.
