An off-licence or supermarket should stock Marsala, which is a fortified Italian wine from Sicily.

Any very sweet wine or fortified wine, sherry or port will do if you cannot source Marsala. Marsala comes dry, semi-sweet and sweet, but most recipes in English cookery books mean the sweet form when calling for Marsala.

Other substitutes include:

Add 1 teaspoon of brandy to a 1/4 cup of grape juice or sweet white wine

or you can mix equal parts sherry and sweet vermouth or sweet wine.

or 1/4 cup of dry white wine plus 1 teaspoon of brandy for a drier version.

YMMV but enjoy experimenting! Good luck!

Any liquor store that carries wine should have Marsala. It's common.
