impromptu cake topping?!

Question: Impromptu cake topping?
We're making a cake, but all we have for topping is crushed oreos. Is there a simple way to make some kind of frosting or other topping using only basic ingredients?

Answers:

this might work for you as almost everyone i know has peanut butter on hand:

PEANUT BUTTER FROSTING:
1 1/2 sticks butter
2 c. brown sugar
4 tbsp. water
2 tbsp. vanilla (you must use 2 tablespoons vanilla)

Bring to boil for 1 or 2 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in 1 1/3 cups peanut butter until smooth. It will not be real thick but thickens on the cake as it cools. Put the hot frosting on the cake while the cake is still hot.

You could melt chocolate chips and dip a fork into the melted chocolate and drizzle squiggles over the top.
If you have marshmallow spread in a jar, you can melt that.
If you have canned fruit, you can add 2 T of corn starch to 2 T of hot juice, then stir it into the boiling fruit and the juice will thicken up like gravy.
Apple sauce is a decent cake topping if you're serving the right kind of cake
Seasoned canned pumpkin can be nice on yellow or spice cake.

Good luck.

Not sure if it goes with oreos, but dulce de leche is a topping you could make.

Here is one using coconut milk http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/v…
Here is one using regular milk http://allrecipes.com//Recipe/dulce-de-l…

Enjoy :)

Added: whoa - just realized the second recipe from allrecipes is for 32 servings, so use the serving calculator to change that before following the recipe. Even the coconut recipe I would half.

You could do a caramel topping. First, have your cake ready to go. Spread the crushed oreos evenly across the cake. Next, make your caramel.

Use 1 cup sugar and about 1/8 cup water. Then, follow the directions below (see source). Pour the caramel directly over your cake.

Wait 5 minutes.

Enjoy!

Blend granulated sugar in the blender until it's the texture of powdered sugar and add a few drops of fruit juice or milk until you have a thick but pourable syrup, drizzle it over the cooled cake as a glaze and let it dry. It will become hardened and crispy.

Ooh... no powdered sugar? Sorry, you can make basically any frosting with very simple ingredients... but really you can't make anything without powdered sugar. Sorry!
