How do you cook braised beef in the slow cooker?!

Question: How do you cook braised beef in the slow cooker?
Forgive me if i sound a little stupid but ive never used a slow cooker before and have a nice piece of braising steak to cook tommorrow and a new slow cooker.
My husband is a bit fussy - doesn't like onions or mushrooms or anything (anything healthy really!!) so i just want to know how to cook the beef on its own (he does like gravy though) - so how do i prep it? What do i put in with it? How long for? and what setting? (High or low)

Thanks in advance!! :-)

Answers:

The beef should be seared first in some hot oil, for flavour.
Put a layer of potatoes in the bottom of the slow-cooker.
I'd add carrots & onions too; hubby needs educating.
Add 1 cup of liquid, such as beef bouillon or red wine.
Place the browned beef on top of the potatoes.
Set slow-cooker on Low for 5-7 hours or High for 3-5 hours.

Slow cooker roast

Ingredients
1 chuck roast (t-bone preferable)
1 packet McCormick Brown Gravy Mix
1 packet Hidden Valley Ranch
1 packet Italian Seasoning Mix
1/2 cup vodka, red wine, or water

Method
Set the roast on a clean platter at room temperature for 30 minutes. Dredge the roast in highly seasoned flour. Heat a large sauté pan over medium-high heat for 2 minutes. Add 1/4 cup of vegetable oil and heat another 2 minutes and add the roast. Sear the roast on all sides until nicely browned. Remove the meat from the pan to the slow cooker

Measure the vodka in a 1 cup measure, then sprinkle in the contents of the three packets. Whisk to combine.

Slather the vodka/spice mixture over the seared roast.

Set the lid atop the slow cooker, set the temperature to low and cook 8 to 10 hours.
