What is a good cookbook for a beginner?!

Question: What is a good cookbook for a beginner?
I am a college student and never had the time to cook a real meal, the microwave has been my best friend. I am looking to start cooking when I have free time but I am still on a college budget so inexpensive recipes would be very helpful! Since I am new to this a simple book might be helpful too!

If I were you, I'd first join either Allrecipes.com or Food.com -- the recipes are rated and free. Membership is also free and the chefs will give immediate good advice on the forum boards.

But if you want a cookbook, here's the one you can go with. All of the recipes are easy, mistakes won't train-wreck them, and you can get the book for a penny plus shipping:

I cook every day and I review lots of cookbooks on Amazon (most really aren't very good for beginners.)

I will make you this simple guarantee: Every recipe in this cookbook looks great and tastes delicious, many are outstanding like TLBS, chicken cacciatore, and BBQed beef strips with noodles. Of all my cookbooks (I've gotten rid of well over 150), this one is my favorite -- my wife loves it too.

Some of the betty Crocker ones are okay but stay away from *The Joy of Cooking*, at least for now.

Good luck.

While my son was growing up he started to cook some of his own meals. He used to make spaghetti sauce with angel hair pasta all the time. It's a good one for someone on a budget. The next best and most inexpensive meals to prepare is anything with potatoes. When you do go out to get a cookbook, look up the used book stores in your area. I have found so many good and cheap books there over the years. You may even be able to find the books that have been mentioned here. Good luck with your cooking adventures.

Hey, I see your a big fan of foodand you really love to cook different foods with that desired passion. I just purchased a really great recipe guide online, and I have now been able to cook fabulous dishes with my guests always complimenting the great food I cook.

I learned so much when I used the Betty Crocker cook book.
It has all of the techniques that a beginner needs to know in
baking and cooking.

Good luck!

The Joy of Cooking is pretty basic, and gives you lots of info about the ingredients and how and why to cook them, not just recipes.
