is the ingredient red 40 only made from beetles(carmine) or can it be made from vegan sources too?!

Question: Is the ingredient red 40 only made from beetles(carmine) or can it be made from vegan sources too?
on a lot of foods these days i see the ingredient red 40. i read that it was another name for carmine which is made from beetles.i was just wondering if red 40 if just carmine or is it just a color name? can it be made from vegan sources also? and if it can how do i know if what i'm eating is carmine or another form of red 40?

Answers:

It could be beetles but they go out in nature and find living natural things that can color something and so it could be beetles or a plant or another type of bug. YUCK!!!

If it is the same red colour as we have in Europe, yes it is made with beetles. Check the USA colour regulations and it may be able to tell you more information.
