Butters better! You can never have too much butter. All the best chefs use butter. Never margerine. Or shortening. And no, the cake will not go soggy. Depending on what season it is where you are (its winter here) you can just cover it and leave it out. Or if its hot jsut put it in the fridge over night. And take it out about an hour before serving. It wil be perfect.
Butter vs shortening--both will have a slightly different flavor and texture in your filling, but it won't make enough of a difference to matter.
If the filling is made correctly, and the cake properly assembled, the filling will not make the cake soggy.
Butter is much better. I can't imagine using shortening in a filling. Follow the recipe. The filling should be ok for tonight If you are worried about it, make the cake, filling and frosting and put it together later.
