How do you cook fresh broccoli?
I've never cooked fresh broccoli before (always had frozen), but I bought some fresh stuff and don't really know how to cook it. I would steam it, but I don't have a steamer insert thing for a pan...any ideas? thanks!

Simple, do it just as you did the frozen, only longer...an inch or two of water, a little salt, cover on a medium boil, and poke with a fork until it feels right to your taste.
Oh, and don't eat the thick stem, although some people do. cut the florets off where they join the stem.
A steamer of course is faster and better.

I have a metal collander and I use that to steam. It works well and because it is metal it is safe as it will not melt.
Steaming is the best as it allows the broccoli to retain its healthful properties
If you don't have a steamer just put water in a pot and then put a smaller pot on top of this pot and place the broccoli in it. Let the water come to a boil and keep checking the broccoli until it is done to your liking. bon apetit
if you dont have steamware then you can go with boiling water with some salt and then dropping the broccoli in for a few secs until they're bright but still tender.
You could try grilling it with a cheese sauce or even making a pastry with broccoli, mash potato and chicken!
Fresh Broccoli Salad:
25 min 15 min prep
4-6 servings
1 bunch broccoli
6 slices bacon
1 cup mayonnaise (you could use fat free)
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
2-4 tablespoons dry roasted sunflower seeds
1. Wash and drain the broccoli and cut into flowerets.
2. Save the stems.
3. With a vegetable peeler peel the outside of the stems and cut into bite size pieces.
4. (Discard the very bottom of the stems where it is thick and tough.) Fry bacon until crisp.
5. Drain and crumble.
6. Mix together mayo, sugar and vinegar.
7. Pour mixture over broccoli and add bacon.
8. Mix.
9. Add sunflower seeds and mix so dressing covers all ingredients.
10. Cover and refrigerate.
Put broccoli in an microwave safe dish with 1/4 cup of water, sprinkle with salt, and cover with plastic wrap and cook in the microwave on high for 3-5 Min's. depending on how done you like it. Try squeezing some fresh lemon juice on it when done.
Throw it into some boiling water for like two minutes. It will start two soften but still have a little crunch and taste fantastic. Afterwards you can put butter, salt, or lemon juice on it. Whatever taste fancies you.
Got to go with the recommended steam. Use a strainer if you have to.

If you don't have a steamer you can either put it in a pot or microwave safe dish with a little bit of water and cook for about 5 minutes, or you can just pop it into boiling water and leave it sit covered for a couple minutes. Don't cook it so long that it goes mushy or you'll lose flavor and vitamins. You can also put it on a grill pan for a few minutes with some olive oil or fry it with some butter, which tastes really good, but I wouldn't recommend it, lol.
the only other thing you could do is just boil the broccoli....this takes away from the nutritional value of it but it will still taste great. Bring your water to a boil and put the broccoli in. When the broccoli gets deep green and is tender it is done...good luck...
well if u have a drainer,like a spagetti drainer, u put the a lil water like a cup depends how much broccoli ur cooking, then add ur ingedients like salt and pepper, etc. put the drainer over the pot and put ur broccoli on the drainer. put the stove on high. and cook it for about 10-15 minutes. Enjoy!
You can use a cullender and a stock pot.. Fill a large stock-pot with some water (not enough to touch the strainer though), stick the cullender so that it sits in the stock pot, and turn the stove-top on. Once the water starts to boil, put the broccoli into the strainer. You now have a steamer. Steam until desired doneness.
i boil it in boiling water until it is tender, then i melt cheese and milk togather and pour it over it. my grand kids love it.
Steamed. If you do not have a steamer just pour boiling water over the broccoli and put a lid on it for a few minutes, you do not want it cooked to much.
Really it's best steamed. Even when I use broccoli in other recipes, like stir-frys, I steam it a bit first, But just steamed is the simplest and possibly, best way to do it.
If you boil it, it won't taste as good, and you'll lose a lot of the nutrition in the water.
The good news is: you can buy a small steamer basket for very little. I think that even some 99cent stores have them, but any big variety store or kitchen store should have a cheap one.

Sauteed Broccoli
* 1 lb. fresh broccoli
* 3 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
* 2 cloves garlic, minced
* 1 tsp. lemon juice
* salt and pepper to taste
PREPARATION:
Cut the broccoli into individual florets. Cut stems into pieces roughly the same size as the florets. Place broccoli in large pot, and bring to boil in salted water to cover. Reduce heat and simmer 3-4 minutes until broccoli is just crisp-tender.Drain thoroughly. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat and cook garlic for 1 minute. Add the drained broccoli and cook 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until broccoli is glazed and tender. Sprinkle with lemon juice, salt, and pepper and serve. Serves 4 to 6.
cut ur broccoli into florets, at the bottom of the stem, slice across to sear it, place in a baking dish(non metal) with stems down, add about 1/4 cup of water, place damp paper towel over the florets, and microwave on high for 3:30, they will be tender, bright green and yummy. My kids loves it like that. Yes they love broccoli, that's the only way they will eat it.
