Do you have any icing recipe that does not require shortening?
Answers:
1 pint of heavy cream
1 large package of instant pudding (any flavor you want)
1/4 cup of milk
Mix cream and pudding in mixer on high speed until pretty well whipped. Add milk a little at a time until desired consistancy is reached. The 1/4 cup is an estimate, you may need more, or less. This is really good icing, and not sicky sweet!
Yes, add butter or margarine to your favorite recipe instead of shortening. A touch of vanilla and a pinch of salt for flavor. Thin with warm cream or milk to the desired consistency!
yes you can use butter or cream cheese.
Your question is unclear - what short of icing do you require? Butter icing, Royal icing, Boiled icing, Plastic icing? I have recipes for all of these and none requires shortening. I can provide if you clarify what you are looking for.

My "go-to" recipe for icing is a cream cheese frosting. You simply take a pat of cream cheese, add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and then fold in powdered sugar until the consistency is that of icing. It's so ridiculously simple (and cheap!), and it makes a great base for other frostings, if you wanted to get creative and add ingredients like chocolate, fruits, or sprinkles.
tons!
my favorites are cream cheese icing and buttercream icing:
Cream Cheese Frosting:
INGREDIENTS
2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup butter, softened
2 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
DIRECTIONS
In a medium bowl, cream together the cream cheese and butter until creamy. Mix in the vanilla, then gradually stir in the confectioners' sugar. Store in the refrigerator after use.

Buttercream Frosting:
INGREDIENTS
1 cup butter (no substitutes), softened
8 cups confectioners' sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 cup milk
DIRECTIONS
In a mixing bowl, cream butter. Beat in sugar and vanilla. Add milk until frosting reaches desired consistency.
Melt butter, add sifted powdered sugar and a splash of milk or cream. Add melted chocolate or a little vanilla flavoring. Thicken, if necessary, with more powdered sugar. It tastes like fudge.
