Help with making Ham Loaf. Please?!
Help with making Ham Loaf. Please?
So I am not a cook what so ever. My grandma use to make ham loaf for us, and I loved it. I want to make it for my little girl. I've been looking on different sites I guess the question I have is, What kind of ham do you get, and what kind of pork do you get? And can you just take the pork and ham to the meat counter and ask for them to ground it???? I've never done this, and I don't have anyone who has made it. I want to make it right. So if anyone can help with this one. what is the best kind of ham to get, and pork. Also, I've seen like with ham, a lot of it is more or less already cooked, so how does that work? Do you also cook the pork? See I'm a lost cause, but any help would be great. Thanks. Also, if you have a recipe, I don't know what she put on it, but it was sweet, I can't remember if it had pinapple or not. Thanks again.

This is the recipe I have for Ham Loaf
1 1/2 lbs smoked ham
1 lb lean, fresh ham
1 C. milk
2 eggs
1 C. plain bread crumbs
Grind smoked ham and fresh ham together. Mix with milk, eggs and bread crumbs. Form into one large loaf or small individual loaves. Place on a baking pan. Cover with sauce below. Lightly sprinkle with ground cloves. Do not cover. Bake at 325 degrees for about 2 hours. Baste with sauce frequently but do not start basting until sauce thickens.
Sauce
1 T. yellow mustard
1/2 c. vinegar
1 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. boiling water
ground cloves
Mix mustard, vinegar, brown sugar, and boiling water together. Pour over ham loaf as indicated above. Continue cooking until sauce thickens and baste loaf frequently.
This recipe comes from the older ladies at a church that I go to. Hope this is what you're looking for. As for the grinding of the fresh ham and smoked ham, any butcher would be glad to do it for you! For the smoked ham, I usually just grab one out of section that has smoked hams at the grocery. The fresh ham might not be so readily available. Talk to the butcher. He may have to cut one for you. As the recipe says, it cooks for 2 hours so having raw ground up pork will easily cook in the 2 hours. I hope I answered all your questions. If something isn't clear, let me know!
