You steam the tin in water for a couple of hours.
place in a pan of cold water, bring to the boil for about 10 mins, simmer for about 1hour, depending how hard u want it, it must be condensed milk tho not evaporated or carnation!
Cook it over a low heat, stirring constantly. it will go from a carmelly brown color to burnt very fast.
put a whole unopened tin in a pot of boiling water, make sure its reall full cause if it evaporates the can has a tendancy to explode =S and we don't want that lol. Leave it there for a few hours on the boil, it should turn into it eventually =)...just be careful
or if that fails, you can put the whole saucepan in the oven (reduces the risk of the can exploding) and put it on about 120/140 degrees C for a few hours...
hope this helps =) x
Put the tins in a pan of water and boil it for about 2 hours. Let the tins go cold, be very careful though because they may explode on you when you try to open them if they are still hot.
Sit back and enjoy.
the most important thing is to keep the tim covered with water at all times, and keep the water at a slow boil. 2 to 3 hours, depending on the consistency you're after, then turn off the heat and let the water and tin come to cool before you open it. Yum!!
Place the cans of condensed milk in a deep saucepan and cover with water, topping up with hot water as necessary. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and cover with a lid. Leave to simmer for two hours. Remove from the water and cool completely. When you open the cans you will find it has turned to a golden sticky caramel.
The fastest way is to boil the unopened can in a pressure cooker. It will take about 20 min from the time it starts to boil. But it is not always the safest, as the can might explode if there is no water left in the cooker, so this is at own risk.
1 can sweetened condensed milk (not evaporated)
Remove label from can. Place unopened can in the bottom of a very deep pot, such as a deep dutch oven. Cover with water so that the water is 3 to 4-inches above the can. Bring the water to a boil and boil steadily for four (4) hours.
Note: You must make sure that the can is always totally covered with water. Never let the water level get down to the top of the can, because this could cause the can to explode

This is the cheats way of doing it:
Carnation sell it ready made - it's called Carnation Caramel, I've made banoffee pies with it and it was lovely!
Plus, much less danger of it exploding in your kitchen that way........
