How do you tell if a steak is medium rare without cutting into it?
Answers:
Press the center of your steak with your finger.
If it feels like your cheek, it's rare.
If it feels like your chin, it's medium.
If it feels like your forehead, it's well done (yuk).
By putting pressure on it with your finger it shoud feel soft not firm.
It is probably very difficult to tell if the steak is medium rare without actually seeing the meat in the center, however, I think that a possible way to indicate might be to poke some holes with a fork in the center, and press on the steak. If the juices have a bit of a... ahem... bloody look to them, then it's probably still pretty rare, and a little more time to cook might be needed to reach "medium rare".
I hope this helps.
invest in an instant read thermometer. The temperature method is fool-proof. Every kitchen needs this tool.
You probably can't with any decent accuracy.
A medium rare steak is grey-brown on the outside. Press the meat with your finger. Rare meat will be soft and wobbly, medium will have a springy firmness and well done will feel very firm and unyielding.
well i have a cooking fork for on the grill and if you stick it in there it has a light that tells you
by comparing it to the tenderness of your meat between your thumb and pointer finger.....relaxed is rare and a little tighter is med rare....etc.
press the palm of your hand...the soft part is rare,,move it over a little and its a little firmer to the touch, that is medium rare, move it to a firmer part of your palm and that would be done
a still firmer part would be well done,
the springyer the feel to the meat, the rarer it is. the firmer the more done..now when it black and feels like bowling ball. eat!!!! enjoy LOL
there is a way by comparison of hand. this is what i learned as a grill cook. http://www.certifiedangusbeef.com/chef/d...
never do i ever poke or cut the steak because it lets out the juices.

Using your left hand, get your thumb to touch your centre finger. Based on the firmness of your flesh at the base of your thumb while doing the motion above, you can gage the steak based on the same firmness for a medium rare steak. Thumb and fore finger would be for rare steak; thumb and pinkie would be for well done steak.
With your left hand, curl your fingers in and try to touch the meaty part at the base of your thumb.
That spot on your thumb will feel like your steak at different levels of 'doneness'.
Middle finger to thumb pad feels like rare steak.
Index to thumb pad feels like medium.
Pinkie to thumb pad feels like well.
Push on the center of your steak as it cooks and see how it compares.
The more you practice cooking meat the better you'll get at judging it's degree of rare-to-well done.
