Good food to eat in the car?
We are getting ready to leave on vacation and I am making sack lunches for everyone (adults -- no kids). What are good recipies for snacks that are car friendly? We are having turkey sandwich wraps, all different kinds of pretzels (twists, long sticks, reg small and large). It is a long trip so some more ideas would be fantastic :)
P.S. We don't want to do fast food if at all possible, so healthy car friendly is what I am looking for :)

how about some carrot stick and celerysticks, really and fresh fruit or vegetables will do
also muffins
energy bars
pop corn
pitas stuffed with deli meat and lettuce
be sure to bring some bottled water and some wipes for the hands
a litlle trick I used to do is to take a couple of empty and rinsed out ( of course ) milk jugs. Fill them with water and freeze. This keeps the food in your cooler from becoming all soggy
Most of all, just have a good time
Nuts and dried fruits work well. My mom would actually always make us pepperoni and cheese rolls when we were travelling when I was a kid--I always loved those.
How about a good old Potatoe or noodle salad?
things like cheese sticks not fried just baked bread sticks with cheese melted on it.
i'd say granola bars. not messy & taste good.
How about you make some trail mix with nuts and dried fruit
Fresh veggie sticks such as celery,carrot,peppers.etc.
Ready made pudding cups,or fruit cups.
Granola bars,breakfast bars.
Apples.oranges,bananas.
Pepperoni sticks or beef jerky with cheese sticks(cubes) and snack crackers.
Good idea to carry along some "wet wipes" for the hands also.
You can now buy Nutter-butters, and Ritz mini cracker sandwiches in little resealable cups. They fit easily into a cup holder so they are very car-trip-friendly. Apples keep well and are also easy to eat with minimal mess. Prunes, raisins, and nuts are a big hit with my two-year-old. Dried apricots and dried cranberries mixed together will make a fun, colorful snack. You didn't ask about drinks, but Crystal Lite individual packets will be fun for the kids to mix into their water and shake up, as a plus they are completely sugar-free. Have a nice trip!
Any kind of trail mix. You can throw together a bunch of ingredients and call it a trail mix. lol A friend of mine made some while I was visiting. She used two different types of Chex cereal, raisins, nuts and m&ms. It was really good.
fresh fruit is always good, crackers and cheese cubes, you can buy popcorn already made or make it yourself at home and put into baggies, bottled water or those energy drinks, chips and salsa, cheese its, trail mixes are good, celery and carrot sticks with some ranch dressing for dipping, canned fruit juices, jar of bread and butter pickles to serve with the sandwiches,
I would put a cooler in the car filled with ice to keep the food and drinks cold.

Cans of nuts like mixed, cashews, peanuts
fruit for energy; wrap each piece in plastic wrap ... it will keep them clean and safe from damage, especially pears and apples with soft skins like McIntosh or Gala apples ..and will provide a little wrap to throw away the cores and skin, seeds ..
trail mix for energy
some iced drink in a thermos if it's hot
weather / hot drink if cool weather.../a thermos of plain hot water for tea bags, coffee sachets, or hot chocolate mix
individual baked casseroles: mac 'n' cheese, little quiches ....
little sausages
raw vegetables: whole carrots, peeled then wrapped in plastic wrap,
tomatoes (wrap them, the skin will be protected and will not be broken easily); radishes ... whatever you like to eat .. (and a dip ... )
individual pies ... sometimes you can buy them, just little ones, or make your own of apple, lemon filling, plum filling .... instead of pies if you can make turnovers ...
salted nuts ... a candy bar or two...or mints ...
coca cola or pepsi as an antidote to
the heat of the road .... especially if it is nice enough weather to roll down the windows ...
here is a nice recipe for a drink ....I forgot where I got it, I am sorry...but the combination of the tea and the fruit juice, and the pieces of fruit are a sure winner ....
Darjeeling Sangria

8 or 10 servings
6 cups of strong Darjeeling tea
3 cups of fresh fruit: strawberries, peaches, melons, mango, etc
3 tablespoons of sugar
3 cups of white grape juice ...
it says to pour over ice cubes (make them of spring water) into iced tea glasses and provide long handled iced tea spoons ... however, for travel, I would use a large thermos
container with a wide mouth to get out the fruit, and for ice cubes, use a bottled iced tea ... it will keep the drink fresh without diluting it ...

go-gurt is easy and comes in an easy to eat car friendly form.
water is best for car rides- as other drinks have sugars in them and make people cranky if they can't move around. if someone needs to have flavor in their water bring along crystal light or something that can be added easy to a water bottle.
make sure you know if anyone has any food allergies or has high or low blood sugar at times before you start the trip then you know what to give them if anything comes of it.
