Answers:
Baking powder substitute

For 1 teaspoon, use: 1/4 teaspoon baking soda plus 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar;

or 1/4 teaspoon baking soda plus 1/2 cup buttermilk, sour cream or yogurt (to replace 1/2 cup liquid called for in recipe).

Try baking soda, they are completely different .

No - you have to have cream of tartar to make the substitution.

As boring as it sounds, there is a complex science behind all of these "mechanical leavening"agents. This type of leavening in a chemical reaction that works by filling itty bitty bubbles with air/chemical reaction or steam.

I can explain it better, but only if you want. It is boring, but it is my job. I am a professional baker with my own small baking business.

You must start with baking soda - sodium bicarbonate -aka Arm & Hammer and then adding anything acidic to it will work ; lemon juice, yogurt ,wine
Basically what's happening is that you are using the acid to dissolve the carbonate in the baking powder. In the process of dissolving the carbonate. carbon dioxide will get released . CO2 is of course your leavening agent .
As with all chemically [ not mechanically] leavened products once the dissolving of the carbonates starts to happen it's irreversible and the product must be made up and cooked with due haste
