What is molasses? What is it called in Europe?
It is used in cooking? Does it have a different name in Europe?
Answers:
Actually, it was the portuguese in what is now Brazil that first produced what they called "mela?o" from sugar cane in the early XVI century, although mela?o/molasses allready existed in Europe when producing sugar from beet, that's why there probably is an equivalent to the english "molasses" in every european language.

If you are producing sugar, you are cooking the plant to get the sugar out. By this process you can extract about 50 % of the sugar. The cooked plant with the restsugar is called molasse in German "Melasse".
