Are cilantro and flat leaf parsley the same thing.?!
Are cilantro and flat leaf parsley the same thing.?
Answers:
No, they are two different herbs that look similar. They taste is different though as parsley has a stronger taste. You can substitute one for the other. If using parsley, only use half as much if it calls for cilantro. I also work for a chef.
They are in the same "family" of herbs, but they do not have the same flavor.
No - but you can substitute parsley for cliantro in a pinch. They look similiar - but if you're at the store and are not sure - you can smell the cliantro.
No it is not. They do look similar, but are drastically different. The taste is very different. They smell different too. You usually find cilantro in most salsas. Parsley is used in noodle salads and such. If you know someone who grows herbs talk to them about it. They will be able to tell you more about the difference between the two.
no! very different look identical.lol...smell s are different also.
As far as I know hun, Cilatro is used as a garnish mosty...but can be a good spice to add to a salad...but not too much to overwhelm. and parsley is used more in Italian dishes. Just my opinion.
no cilantro is a herb that if goes to seed it is called corinander. parsley is not the same . cilantro is use alot in Mexican cooking
No, not at all. Cilantro has a really strong taste. It is a taste found in a lot of Mexican cooking. But to me, and a lot of people who don't like it, it has an almost soapy taste. Flat leaf parsley looks a lot the same, but it has a very mild taste, just sort of a 'green ' taste. It is slightly bitter and sort of grassy.
Not the same. I think cilantro has more of a pungent (but pleasant) taste and smell while parsley is more mild.
you can mix then together in the same ..menu.. I known Emerli does it on the food network?, if he does it .. I guess it's all good!
I have read that they are cousins, having a little different flavor. Use whichever one you want to. One can be substituted for the other in any recipe.
No. They're similar, but cilantro has a more pungent taste than parsley.
absolutely NOT! totally different, but look very much alike. i love my cilantro. YUM!
Nope...totally different taste. Cilantro is primarily found in Mexican and Thai cuisine. Parsley is found all type of cuisines.
no, they have a difference flavor , cilantro is a member of the carrot family is also referred to as Chinese Parsley and Coriander. It is actually the leaves (and stems) of the Coriander plant. Cilantro has a very pungent odor and is widely used in Mexican, Caribbean and Asian cooking. The Cilantro leaves look a bit like flat Italian parsley and in fact are related.
NO much different taste. Parsley tastes good whereas cilantro has a taste that you got to aquire a taste for it. Personally I hate Cilantro. Also cilantro is an annual where parsley is a biennial meaning it grows leafy the first year then it flowers the 2nd yr.
Absolutely not. Both cooks and botanists will agree. If your cooking in Mexico and a salsa dish calls for cilantro, try throwing in flat leaf parsley! Your dish won't make it past the door! Cilantro has a deep almost pungent green flavor softened with a nice green flavor, fresh almost like a cross between a freshly mowed lawn and a lemon. For some people new to this flavor, it takes a while to acquire. It is said that some people may have a genetic trait which alters the taste of cilantro so that it tastes like soap! Cilantro is used mostly in Latin American dishes, Portuguese and Vietnamese foods. Long ago Europeans favored it , but no longer.
Flat leaf parsley, though it almost looks the same, has a mild almost salad like flavor, with the faintest hint of licorice. Chop it up and it's great in Middle Eastern dishes like tabbouleh. But try throwing cilantro in tabouli. You'll have the Lebanese community gagging. Middle Eastern and European cooks tend to use Flat Leaf Parsley. If cooking doesn't convince you they are different, we will now look at it's botanical classification.
Cilantro is better known as Coriandrum sativum by it's Latin nomenclature. Unlike the Flat Leaf Parsley it is an annual herb. It is also in the family Apiaceae. In research the essential oil of cilantro, dodecanol, inhibits the growth of bacteria such as E. coli. and salmonella, being twice as effective as a leading antibacterial agent.
Flat Leaf Parsley's Latin name is Petroselinum crispum. It is a biennial herb. It is also in the Apiaceae family. Flat leaf is stronger in flavor than curly leaf and the testing of essential oils proves it. Parsley also has a compound in it's seed coat which inhibits the growth of other plants, showing promising results in natural weed control.
Absolutely not. Cilantro has a much more distinct flavor than flat leaf (or Italian) parsley. Also, Italian parsley has a much better flavor than curley parsley. Curley parsley tends to be a bit tough. Dried cilantro is known as coriander.
Simply put. no. Cilantro is the Spanish term for Corriander.
