Non-Dairy or Alternates for Kids' Recipes?!

Question:

Non-Dairy or Alternates for Kids' Recipes?

My Son was diagnose with chronic anemia set off by a hidden allergy to the protein in Milk. As a result he cannot have anything containing milk, milk protein, whey or other hidden ingredients that are milk related.

He drinks Rice Milk because he also cannot have Soy Milk. I use Rice Milk for certain recipes but I am finding it very difficult to find things that do not contain milk in them that would appeal to him. He wants to have pizza and other things like his sister and other kids eat, but I dont know of a way to make these things for him. I've relentlessly searched for recipes and things to help but I'm not finding much.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. He is going on 4 years old by the way and spent some time in Children's Hospital for his illness, so please no smartasses, this is my child we're talking about. Thank you in advance to all willing to help :)

Aw, i'm very sorry to hear that.

But, for things such as pizza, you could make the regular pizza as you would (with dough or I like to use a whole wheat english muffin, yum! and sauce, toppings, olive oil, etc.) But for the cheese, if you go to the organic section of grocery stores or near the regular cheese, they sell cheese that is made out of vegetables and tastes delicious! Just like regular cheese, no dairy. It also comes in a variety of flavors so you can top his pizza with any kind you want, then you can get even more creative with the toppings. I hope this helps!

This isn't much help but as far as deserts go, you can make sorbet with an ice cream maker. It is just as good as ice cream and not as fattening. You can make all kinds of flavors.
Good luck,

Wow, this is a hard one. Can you do a cheese-less pizza? If you have enough other stuff on it, he may not miss it. It's going to take some creativity on your part. The people att the health-food store may become your best friends. Check to see if there is a Whole Foods, Wild Oats, or Trader Joe's near you. Go in and talk to some of the people who work there. I'm sure you'll find a lot of alternatives that taste great. You may end up making the changes for the whole family, just because it's easier than making seperate meals.

try this website.. they have lots of good recipes.

I am lactose-intolerant and use non-dairy coffee creamer for a lot of things, and vegetable cheese. Look for the ones not made of soy. There is also rice ice cream. Try the natural foods stores or those sections in the supermarket. You can also make a cheese-less pizza with sauce, toppings and no cheese. It can taste really good.

Awww, I feel so bad for him. Of all things to be allergic to, that has to be really hard. For a young boy like that to have to avoid all the fun foods of growing up is terrible.

I really do not know much about this but would suggest you see a health food store. There has to be many alternatives out there that can be used in place of ingredients he is allergic too.

I wish your son well, I feel so bad for him to have to grow up with this.

I have been told that if the milk is drank whole, meaning fresh from an animal and the cream (or the buttermilk and butter) not taken out, that the total ingredients help each other to digest itself properly. They say that's the reason so many are 'allergic' to milk products, and that some people can actually drink it again if they do it that way. I'm so sorry, and I wouldn't try this without a doctors advice seeing that this is a child, and not just any child, but YOUR child, and that he's had serious issues with this. Bless his heart (and yours!). I feel really bad for him because I love dairy products!
I have noticed that I can live without cheese on certain things, like pizza, if I have enough seasonings, like garlic, on them.
