A friend of mine made me lox and bagels once. Thank God he slathered on the cream cheese because, no, you don't cook the salmon. It's smoked and that's how you eat it.

Lox IS smoked salmon and smoked salmon is lox!
It's cooked by the smoking so you can use it as--is!
.

yeah just eat it! yum! (no cooking, smoking is all that happens, thats why its soo good)

Lox is smoked salmon..so you do not need to cook it in any way, if you have the packaged kind, just take it out and use it in your fave recipe. Or you could serve it with different kinds of breads or crackers, veggies, or cheeses. Seeing as it is smoked, it is basically cooked.

lox is uncooked thinly sliced salmon

Lox, is ready to eat, right from the package. Lox is smoked salmon. However, not all smoked salmon is lox.

Lox is not cooked. Lox is made by a process of curing the salmon in brine, then often (but not always) cold smoking it for flavour only.In fact,"true" lox is not smoked at all, just cured by brining. The smoking does not cook the fish, and when examined, you'll see it retains it's raw appearance.

Forms of Lox include, Nova smoked Salmon, Scottish smoked salmon, and Gravlax (aka Gravad Lax). However, gravlax is merely cured through brining and not smoked at all.

Smoked salmon that you often see consumed in Alaska, and sold vacuumed packed in wooden boxes (often in gourmet shops around the holiday season), is cooked. These are products are "hot smoked". The term "hot" meaning cooking not the "hot" associated with peppers. Salmon Jerky also falls into this category.

Lox is salmon that has been cured by salt, sometimes by smoke. Slice thinly and place on a cream cheese covered bagel. A nice addition is minced red/purple onion, and or some minced hard boiled egg.
