What is sorbitol and what is it made from?!

Question:

What is sorbitol and what is it made from?

Answers:
Sorbitol is a bulk sweetening agent, derived from glucose by a chemical change that adds a hydroxil to the complex that it is made up from, which is why it is sometimes referred to as a 'sugar alcohol'. (Another name for it is glucitol.)

It occurs naturally in certain stone fruits, and in fruit from the Sorbus genus, like the Rowan berry.

There are questions, about Sorbitol contributing to gastro-intestinal conditions, which are under continual review. (I've left an example in 'sources' below.)
