How long does it take for oil to heat to 400 degrees?!

Question:

How long does it take for oil to heat to 400 degrees?

We're making tortilla chips and we don't have a deep fryer. By just heating up the oil in the pan, how do we know when it's hot enough?

Answers:
I used to Make Fries at the Rose Bowl in High School. For oil to heat up to that Temperature on open flame would take 5-14 mins depending on how much oil you use and the type of pan thickness and metal type.

I recommend low level of Oil cooking on Max and just keep flipping the Chips. 5 mins on MAX. Watch the color of the Chips that will help!

Do I look like Chef Boy R D. Put the flame on high and invest in a deep fryer. You can tell, You won't be able to put your finger in it, Don't get hurt. Go to Taco Bell

The easiest way to test the oil is to put one chip in it to see if it starts to fry. if it is add a few chips. remember when you take the first batch out, you may have to let the oil heat a minute again to get it nice and hot again.
The oil will start to smell hot when its just about ready.

just buy a thermometor... something like a candy or frying thermometor will work. FYI, you might find one in a large grocery store, but definitely @ a kitchen specialty store.

As far as how long it just depends on how hot the heating source is. Short answer 10-15 minutes in most cases.

-good luck
