R real potatoes better than using the ones in a can?!

Question:

R real potatoes better than using the ones in a can?

I am giving a retirement party and need to make 20 pounds of potato salad. I dread the thought of peeling all those potatoes. People love my potato salad so I don't want to spoil it by using canned potatoes. Do you think it will be ok or will it taste different?

Answers:
I know that's a lot of potatoes, and when I entertain, I dread it as well. Still, nothing, and I mean NOTHING, beats home made real potato salad. I had an assembly line going when I did my last party. I prepped all the ingredients first, and the potatoes last. Once I got the potatoes done, it was all down hill from there! Best of luck, I feel your potato peeling pain.

I ALWAYS use real potatoes. I think the canned ones taste different no matter what you do to them. I know it will be hard work, but think of all the compliments you'll have. Look at it this way, if you use the canned ones and nobody eats it, you did all the work for nothing. You might also want to try making a very small batch to see for yourself. My best advice is trial and error. Good luck.

I didnt even know potatoes come in a can..thats kinda nasty (sorry)...maybe since potatoe salad has alot of flavor you can't really taste the "can" taste. If i were you I would just make it the orginal way- how you usually make it. or maybe use half with cans and the other with real taters. good luck

Don't spoil your salad with canned potatoes. They are nasty. Altought it is a lot of work to peel and boil 20lb, but it is worth it.

I make the traditional german potatoe salad from our family recipe and I am famous for it. If I would use canned potatoes, no one would want to eat my salad ever again.
.

I hate to say, but they absolutely taste different: preservatives!!! and if you manage to find some that are free of that, they're packed in salt. I think some supermarkets sell prepeeled fresh potatoes near the bagged lettuce section. Other than that, go with red skin potatoes and don't bother peeling... just wash, or have a pre-party peeling party...or tell people that they can each bring a peeled potato to you ahead of time to help your cause ;-) best of luck, and you're super sweet to do it.

Real potatoes are better. The canned ones have all this liquid in them which I think is gross. There is probably a lot of sodium in that liquid and who knows what else.

While I would use canned potatoes in a soup stew or roast, I'd hesitate to use them for potato salad. I don't think it would have the same texture or flavor.

I know that making potato salad is a very time intensive process. Even though you have many fans, either get some help for peeling and slicing, or make a less time-intensive dish.

You might consider changing to small red potatoes, as you can use those unpeeled, and they give an attractive appearance as well. Use a food processor (borrow if you need to!) to help do all the slicing. If the potatoes are very small, you may need only quarter them, and your salad will be attractive, and very tasty too. You may announce that this is in honor of the retiree, too!

After all, I'm sure that you don't wish to arrive at the party too tired to enjoy yourself.

It will most likely taste different. No matter what you do, potatoes in a can have a slightly different flavour than fresh potatoes, and the texture is not going to be adjustable.

If you can, always go with fresh. But if you really want to use canned, why not make a very small batch for yourself with the canned potatoes, to see if the difference in flavour is overly noticeable?

Hi, I am so sorry to tell you that it will taste different. The canned can never match the real thing I am afraid. So if you are famous for your potato salad, I would choose real potato's. That said, can`t you get some help to the peeling? to cook them takes time, but then you have a window to prepare the other ingredients. Anyway, good luck, and peace and love from Norway
