Can vegetable shortening be melted into vegetable oil?

making a derby pie....ran out
i think my mom said that it can be but not positive


Answers:
You sure can. There is no need to if it's for the crust. Using shortening for the crust will give it a more resiliant quality. Just mix it in with the dry ingredients until the mixture is crumbly. Add any wet ingredients and work it as normal. If you use it in the filling, it will end up being a little firmer.

Frying―Sure! Go ahead and use melted shortening for fried foods.

Salad dressing―Because shortening will resolidify when it cools, we don’t recommend it as a salad topper.

Baking―Shortening can be melted and then measured according to the recipe. It should be allowed to cool slightly before adding to other ingredients.
