Question:

Can i crush a can of diced tomatoes to make crushed tomatoes?

I making stew and it calls for a can on crushed tomatoes and i accendently bought diced tomatoes..can i just smash them and still use it??

Answers:
you can crush them yourself or leave them as they are, which is how i always make my stew,my family loves tomatoes so the more chunks the better.

Yeah that would be a good substitution. Just crush them by hand or in your blender for a few seconds.

yes just pass through a strainer first. I do it all the time

Sure you can. A lot of chefs recommend buying whole tomatoes and crushing them yourself because canned whole tomatoes are usually a better grade.

you cabe use the diced tomatoes the way they are if u want. it will save you some effort. why do i know? i did they same thing last week! It tasted just fine

I think you take 1 1/3 cups of diced tomatoes and simmer them for about 10 minutes to give you 1 cup of crushed/stewed tomatoes.

the stew might not tast too good if you crush the can. too much metal.

otherwise if you take the tomatoes out of the can and then crush them you should be fine. they might taste different due to the extra ingrediants of a canned tomato

yeah - i cant see why it wouldnt work!

Yes you can. Alternately, you can process it. Another suggestion is to consider using it in its present form. It would be like the difference between chunky pasta sauce and smooth,

Molly, Yes you can by using a potato masher. Use a manual one the old fashion kind. Good luck.

It shuold work. Try crushing them in the blender or food processor.

Of course! Chop 'em, smash 'em, or put 'em in a blender and mush them a bit. (You could also put them into the stew diced...the stew will never know!)
