Baking soda or baking powder?
Most recipes dont call for baking soda........

1/2 cup butter, melted
1 cup white sugar
2 eggs
1/2 cup self-rising flour
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour an 8x8 or 9x9 inch baking pan.
In a medium bowl, beat together the butter and sugar. Add eggs, and mix well. Combine the flour, cocoa and salt; stir into the sugar mixture. Mix in the vanilla and stir in walnuts if desired. Spread evenly into the prepared pan.
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until edges are firm. Cool before cutting into squares.

Fudge Brownies

Ingredients:
3 tablespoons cocoa
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1 egg, beaten
1/4 cup butter, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup finely chopped walnuts
1/2 cup flour
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, divided (real chocolate please)

Prep:
Preheat oven to 325F.
Thoroughly grease a 9" x 9" x 2" pan.
Reserve 2/3 cup of the chocolate chips.
Mix all the ingredients except the reserved chips until well blended.
Press the mixture into the greased pan (I usually use my fingers to do this).
Bake for about 20 minutes, turn off oven and remove brownies.
Sprinkle the reserved chips evenly over the top of the brownies and return to the turned off oven for several minutes to melt the chocolate chips.
Using a knife spread the melted chocolate chips evenly over the top of the brownies.
Cut into 25 pieces.

It doesn't matter. You can still use the recipes even if you don't have baking powder. Just use self-rising flour in any recipe you like and leave out the baking powder and salt. Self-rising flour already contains those ingredients and all-purpose flour does not.
