Barbecue ?!
Barbecue ?
If you worked for year at the best ribs, would you give away the recipe to family if they asked you? And by the way you know that they would F'up the recipe because they would not spend the 36 hours needed.

If you know they're going to just screw up the recipe anyway, then it won't taste like yours, now will it?
99% of the time, they won't go to the trouble to even cook it, so don't worry about giving them the recipe. If your skills are as good as you think they are, then you will always have an edge over everyone else when it comes to cooking...it comes from you gut, not the recipe!
I would probably give it to them anyway as long as it wasn't a competition situation (we both entered Bar-B-Q contests, that kind of thing). I always share my recipes with my family, but you are absolutely right about them not taking the time to do it right.
My theory is that if I know they can't make it taste like mine, why create friction?
Yeah there's a lot of cooking that requires some finesse and good timing. For instance, read the recipe for making biscuits on the bag of flour. It makes it sound like you just throw the stuff in a bowl and stir it up and voila! Perfect, soft, fluffy golden brown bites of heaven. Well anyone who's tried knows it ain't so. There are some specific additional steps you need to know, like chopping up the lard or butter finely, don't stir too much, etc. My father-in-law has a fantastic recipe for BBQ sauce that he gave to me. Can I duplicate it? No, it's always too spicy. For the same reason. He gave me the numbers and names of the ingredients, but there's some particulars about the way it's made that I just don't know. So I say if you know they're not gonna do it right, let 'em have the recipe, it won't do them any good.
They are asking for a recipe that didn't originate with you therefore NOT sharing with FAMILY members seems selfish. You had an entire year to practice making the sauce so you should exercise some kindness and patience and help them develop the skill at making a great sauce.
Nope. There are some things of your own that you should always keep as your own. You should always have somethng everyone always wants ;p
Keep your recipe to your self and sell it.If you have perfected a recipe, then go with it and let it make you famous.I only share simple recipes.Go for it...
