I like to warm up the ham in the hot skillet first and melt the cheese on top and then set it aside. Then I like to place two slices of buttered bread into the pan and put ham on topand then put the other bread on top and flip and smash down. The other thing I do is put it on french bread and put under the broiler.
Are you serious? first you kill the pig. peel off the skin cut some ham from it and cook it. Then you place your cheese and ham on bread put another piece on top. put butter on the outsides of the bread and put it in a pan and cook it
spread the bread with butter on one side of both pieces of bread. on the unbuttered side, put a slice of cheese on it, and a few slices of thin ham. close the sandwich together, with the buttered sides on the outside.
heat a non stick skillet on medium heat. put the sandwich in the pan and let it brown on one side, once it is browned on one side, flip it over with a spatula. then let it brown on the other side until the cheese is melted.
george forman grills work great for grilling sandwhiches... just put 2 pieces of ham and one piece of cheese (if you put too much it will not melt all the way through, then put it in grill... or if you want to pan fry it just put butter on outside of bread and cook till melted in middle or brown on both sides.. yummm

margarine
garlic
ham
cheese (Swiss or cheddar work best)
Heat up a caste iron skillet, under medium heat.
Spread the margarine on the two slices of bread. (We all know how bad margarine is for you, but it works the best.)
Spread the garlic on the margarine.
Slap the bread, margarine side down on the skillet. you should hear a sizzle.
Quickly add strips of ham and cheese.
Put the top slice of bread on maragaine side up.
After a few minutes turn the sandwich over. Once both sides are nice and golden brown, remove the sandwich from the skillet, and serve.
Serve with Hidden Valley Range Dressing.
Melting the ham will require excessive heat, but the cheese will melt quickly. Depending on your lifestyle. If you only have a microwave you can put some butter or oleo on the bread wedging some cheese in between the slices of bread or the roll microwaving only about 15 seconds, remove then add the ham and microwave about 15 seconds or a few more seconds if the cheese is not bubbly.
If you have a barbecue, place the bread with or without butter or oleo or olive oil on a slice of aluminum foil complete making the sandwich thence put the foil wrapped sandwich on the bar b. Or you can follow the directions of the other answers and grill the sandwich.
The easiest with the least dishes to clean or special equipment is to toast the bread in the toaster and then add your ham & cheese while the bread is still hot.
Otherwise you can use a skillet and cook on the stove - just make sure you butter your bread so it doesn't stick.
Also there are "sandwich makers" which you put everything in and smash the sandwich - this is my favorite but requires special equipment!
Spread mayo very thinly on 2 slices of bread. Add any American cheese (melts easily) and ham. Spread softened butter on the outside sides of the sandwich. Bring a skillet to a "just under medium" heat. Add sandwich. Use spatula to peek under the edge to keep an eye on browning. Flip when is browned and repeat with other side.
I make mine in a skillet with a bacon-press !!
I haven't been able to find a good grill... the Foreman Grill is too limited for my tastes.
