Answers:
onions have have these enzymes that makes our eyes go teary. if you dont want to get teary eyed while you cut them, put your onions in the fridge. the temperature in there does not only keep it from perishing fast, but it also lowers the production of that certain enzyme. you can also put the onions in a bowl or small tub of water for a few minutes since it also lessens the "eye watering" incident.

Posted this link, but thought I would paste the article instead. Hope it helps.

Using a knife, cut a cone out of the bottom of the onion (where the roots come out). The diameter of this cone should be about a third of the diameter of the onion, and about 1/3 deep. Take this piece and throw it away (don't put it down the disposal!). This piece contains the part/gland that makes baby Jesus and everyone else in the room cry when you're chopping it up. Once you've gotten that piece out, chop off the top, peel, and slice the onion.

Been doing it for years, and it works like a charm. You know your cone is too small if it doesn't work, because you've cut into that teargas grenade.

15 minutes before cutting the onion you should put it in the freezer. Freezing the cells prevents mist. Do not over-freeze your onions.

The fresher the onions are the less your eyes will water. I've got a friend who wears goggles when they cut onions and says that helps but I think that method is a little extreme. I find when they are colder they are easier to slice. The more you cut them the faster you will get....less chance for your eyes to water!

Wear swimming goggles. It works plus you get to pretend you are a superhero.

There are loads of different stories about stopping onions from making your eyes water, But what makes them water is the spray from the onion so the best thing to do is to wear some goggles, if you dont mind looking silly. I have been a chef for 15 years and they still get me every time.

cut fast

You can try goggles like others have said, also try the frezzing for 15 mins. I personally have tried cutting onions by an open flame on the stove and that seemed to work for me.

Anyway, once in awhile you will still get an onion that will bring a grown man to tears.

It sounds silly but a cold, wet, metal spoon held in your mouth attracts the mist and stops it getting up to your eyes. Damping your face works just as well.

Another way round it is to rinse the onion before starting so it is damp, and keep making your knife wet.

If nothing works, then do a couple of pounds of onions all at once, once a week, so you don't have this misery so often. Tie them in food bags in portion sizes and leave them in the fridge (make sure those are good knots on the bags!)

hold a matchstick between your teeth while chopping onions

Using a sharp knife and fresh onions help, so does peeling the onion under cold water - but try chewing gum while peeling / cutting onions. You will be surprised at the difference, and you don't have to look silly!

chew gum,it is effective.try it!

I use this all the time, light a candle next to your cutting board. It will help immensely! Hope I could help.
