How long should you cook a steak on the grill?
Answers:
Usually no longer than 5-7 minutes on each side. But to be sure, you need to cut into the middle of the thinnest and thickest steaks to be sure it's the donness you want. You will need to take the thinner ones off first if you don't want them well-done. Take the thickest ones off last, or else they will be too rare.
it depends on how well done you like it. 3 minutes each side for rare, 5 for medium & at least 7 minutes each side for well
Until it's darkish brown on both sides and still a bit red in the middle. There is no time because no one knows what temperature your grill is.
There are too many variables to this question - depends on the thickness of the steak, the type of steak, the temperature of your grill, how close it is to the heat, how well or rare you like it done...you get the idea!..An instant read thermometer can come in really handy here, until you get used to how hot your grill gets, etc...these are the temps:
* Very Rare Steak - 120°
* Rare Steak - 125°
* Medium-Rare Steak - 130° - 135°
* Medium Steak - 140° - 145°
* Medium-Well Steak - 150° - 155°
* Well-Done Steak - 160°
Otherwise, the touch test is usually the easiest, plus you aren't poking holes in your steaks and letting the juices out (Never cut into a steak on the grill!)...
* Very Rare Steak - feels soft and squishy
* Rare Steak - soft to the touch
* Medium-Rare Steak - yields gently to the touch
* Medium Steak - yields only slightly to the touch, beginning to firm up
* Medium-Well Steak - firm to the touch
* Well-Done Steak - hard to the touch
I hope these help!!!
Someone has touched on the touch test ... no matter what everyone else says, do not poke into the steak with a thermometer or cut open to check how done it is. This just loses juices and make for a extremely hard steak when eating.
I like to follow the following 'touches' for my steak. Poke it with your finger and if you like it ...
Rare to Medium Rare: It should feel like when you poke your cheek.
Medium to Medium Well: Like the tip of your nose.
Well Done Plus: Your forehead.
Also ... please don't cook your steak well done LoL. There are so many people that just assume they want it like that because they don't take the time to learn how to cook a steak properly, it really takes away from the texture of the steak and the quality of the meat. Not everyone will eat it like me (3 minutes, per side, no more, no matter what) but when you learn to appreciate medium, then medium rare, it really helps expand your tastes. Personally, I like a rare with the lightest of warm centers ... but, i'm a carnivore.
