dont put salt on it! tricky tricky!
Look for a ham with "no salt added", and definitely don't buy country ham. Most hams are salty due to salt being used as a preservative.
They do sell some reduced-sodium hams, but even then, there's GOT to be a bunch of salt, otherwise it's not (cured) ham, it's just pork!
Really, the only way to eliminate some of the salt from a ham is to draw the salt out, using water. Have you heard of the old trick, where you boil the ham with raw potatoes? Well, it does work, but there's a problem: the ham is already cooked...why would you boil it??
The thing to do is find a large enough vessel to hold the ham, such as a large cooking pot, or even an ice chest or thermos cooler. Put the ham in, and pour in fresh, cold water. Put a lid on it (you don't have to refrigerate it), and let it rest for 24 hours. Change the water every four hours or so....it's not that critical.
Afterward, bake or prepare the ham as you normally would.
Take it and wash it under the kitchen sink tap just plain water then cook it. It does help get the salt off of it.
boil it first for like two hours
My mom always soaked the ham in a basin of water and changed the water two or three times. That drew the salt out. Then she put salt free seasonings on it before baking.
soak for 24 hours and change water 3 or4 times then rub in some Honey and brown sugar
