I don't have a sifter what can I use instead?
The Problem: I am going to make cupcakes and the recipe saids to "sift flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt".
Do I really need to sift?
What can I use instead and how?
Answers:
Use a sieve, strainer or pasta drainer.
If you use sifted all purpose flour you don't really need to sift. I rarely do unless I'm using cake flour.
If you have a wire wisk of some type - you could whip the dry ingredients to soften them up instead of the sifter.
Place in a food processor and lightly process a few turns. Easy and efficient.
For flour you can buy presifted flour. When you add the other dry ingredients add them very slowly and gently. Best way I can think of, but you should get yourself a sifter.
It will just make your cupcakes more fluffy when you sift. No big deal, but I can't think of anything else you can use.
You don't totally need to sift, you could just stir well. But if you have a small-holed colander or strainer, that works really well!
Well, generally not really for something like cupcakes. But if you choose to, use a wire mesh strainer. put the dry ingredients in it, and tap the edge (your hand works fine for this)...contents will sift through, just like an actual "sifter". If you don't want to sift at all, mix dry ingredients with a wire wisk (or a fork, in a pinch). The basic goal is well incorporated dry ingredients with no lumps.
Do you have a tea strainer? Sifting makes it flufflier and not as likely to lump. Do it, if the recipe says so. It will make the cake lighter.
If you have a strainer (round with a mesh convex middle and a handle) you can use that by putting portions of each ingredient into it in layers and stirring it so they sift together. If not, put your ingredients in a bowl together and run a fork through them until they are thoroughly mixed.
Use one of those metal strainers that are screens, tapping the sides. The larger the hole the faster it will come out. A French whip a few time through or a meat serving fork. Enjoy your cupcakes.
cheesecloth comes in arious sizes of holes.you might have to go and look and compare for what you are sifting though.
well you get a cup and then get anopther cup and shake the stuff inside it
sifting puts air into the dry ingredients, so sifting is usually needed. if you use all ready sifted ingredients then you dont need to sift yourself. other wise use a strainer, it works just as well.
put together in large bowl with lid and shake together.....the ingredients just need to be incorporated together
