How to cook sausages?
i want to cook some sausages but on the back of pack it says grill or shallow fry. I can't grill them cos it sets by grill alight and I don't want to fry them as i'm trying to eat healthily, can anyone tell me whats best to do
Answers:
Ok, here we go..only cheap or mass produced sausages (in general) release alot of fat where as most(if not all) of your locally produced one's don't, so in future go for the local one's everytime, take my word for it cos it's worth the little bit of extra effort to get them. My guess is you are a student by the sound of your grill (!)so go for the fry pan. If they are quality sausages you will not get alot of fat coming out so just use a drop(pea size is enough) of oil to start them off, put them on a medium heat first then turn down the heat and cook 'em slow, let the juices that come out go crispy round the edges, yum yum, turn them over, once is enough and they will soon be done. Or do the same in the oven(bout 30-40mins) but you don't need to turn them over. On the other hand if they are mass produced there is little you can do to avoid the fat coming out, no matter what you do, other than pouring off the excess fat as they are cooking, whichever method of cooking you choose. The reason for all the fat coming out is the type of cuts of meat that go in them, it's the cheap meat in them that makes cheap sausages and it's that that makes them un-healthy so always go local, they cook better and by god they taste SO MUCH better, christ i could do with some right now!!

The experiences of a life long sausage lover, no pun intended!
Cook them in the oven.
Your not eating healthily if you eat sausages.Fry them on a low
heat in their own fat. When done dry on tissue.
Put them in a pan in the oven. If you have a broiler pan that would be best because then the fat would drip out and they aren't sitting in it. Next time by leaner sausages, like turkey sausages.
I'd say give the grill a VERY thorough washing. It catches light due to fat settling on it.
By grilling them, I assume you mean under the oven. If you've got a grilling machine/griddle pan, use that.
Make sure to wash them before you start, though!
grilling on a lower shelf with prevent fire as will emptying the pan of fat from previous meals and you can bake sausages, try gas mark 4 for 25-30mins
Buy a packet or a jar (easier) of casserole sauce and let them bubble in it on the hob or in the oven - nice.
eat them raw
i always cook them in the oven put the oven on 200c put your sausages on a flat metal baking sheet put them in the oven no fat for 20 to30 mins drain off fat ready to eat gorgeous.
well try George Foreman Grilling if u got one, it less fatting and doesn't need oil on it so it like BBQ. or oven with some oil not lard in dish so there u are.
We use a George Foreman grill, for all things greasy and it works a treat. If you do not have one, then fry them with only a little oil. prick them with a knife and wipe with a tissue before serving up.
Get yourself a George foreman grill, it's brilliant
Put some water in the bottom of the pan and let them boil. Once the water is gone. Then you fry them without oil. In the same pan.
Frying dosent automatically mean unhealthy.
Get a clean frying pan, add a bit of oil, just enough to cover the bottom of the pan.
Pre heat you oven to GM4.
Fry your Sausages to sealed all over and just Brown.
Bang them in Oven for 25 mins
Lovely juicy tasty sausages for you.
I put them in a deep skillet , add water and let them simmer away! When they're done, remove with tongs and place on paper towel to dry. It worked for me! I don't eat meat, but I cook it for other people. It's healthier to eat veggie based products, like Garden Burgers, if you're serious about eating healthy. It's easier to buy pre-cooked sausages that you just have to heat and eat. Whatever appeals to ya'! Good luck!
I like to cook sausages in a hot oven, turning them once or twice so they brown evenly.
Place the sausages on a shallow pan lined with parchment paper or alum. foil. Don't oil/spray the pan.
Put them in a pre-heated 400 degree oven for about 12-15 minutes (depending on thickness) and then turn them. Check them again in about the same amount of time. This will crisp and seal the sausage casing, but will also allow excess fat to cook out. They should reach an internal temperature of 170 degrees if they contain pork, otherwise 165 degrees will do. A slim kitchen thermometer is a great investment for food safety.
Place them on paper towels immediately after taking them out of the oven.
If you are cooking "fully cooked" sausages, remember that you still need to get them up to food safe temperatures internally. If they have been cooked already, they are considered to be handled like "leftovers" and should be brought to at least 165 degrees inside before consuming, and as quickly as possible. So, if you don't mind a non-crispy exterior, you can do the already cooked sausages in a microwave. Just don't use plastic...it contains dioxins that leech into the food at high microwave temps., especially with high fat foods. Paper plates and paper towels will do, or a glass dish covered so it doesn't splatter grease all over the inside of your micro.
You could boil them for few minutes first, then put them on the grill. Boiling them helps get rid of some of the fat.
oven cook them, i do and they taste brilliant
this is a healthy recipe i make with sausage only serves 2 so you may have to adjust.

5 ounces mild Italian sausage links

1/3 medium green bell pepper, sliced
1/3 medium red bell pepper, sliced
1 teaspoon Marsala wine
1/3 (14.5 ounce) can Italian-style diced tomatoes, undrained
1/3 pinch dried oregano
1/3 pinch black pepper
DIRECTIONS
Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook pasta for 8 to 10 minutes, or until al dente; drain.
Place whole sausages and 1/3 cup water in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cover, and cook 5 to 8 minutes. Drain and thinly slice.
Return sausage to skillet. Stir in garlic, onions, peppers, and Marsala wine. Cook over medium-high heat, stirring frequently, until sausage is cooked through. Stir in diced tomatoes, black pepper, and oregano. Cook about 2 minutes more, then remove from heat. Serve over cooked pasta.

I always oven cook sausages.
Oven at about 180c and roast for about an hour or till golden brown all over.
If you have time drop the temperature a bit and cook longer and they get wonderfully sticky :)
