BBQ onions

This is a very simple 3 ingredient BBQ side dish. I think this is an easy and excellent side dish for any BBQ meat. Hope you do too.

4 servings 1? hours 15 min prep
4 large onions
1/2 cup butter
4 chicken bouillon cubes
Peel outer layers of onion and slice off a section of one end of each onion (about 1/4 of onion) With a spoon scoop out a hole in the middle of each onion.
Place bouillon cube in hole and add some butter.
Replace top of onion and wrap in heavy foil.
With a closed grill cook for 1 hour or until tender.
Cut into bite size chunks and pour juices over top

You answered your own question put onion in foil with alot of butter and but it right on the grill sure to bring bad great memories

If it is like doing corn then you make a pouck for the onion with heavy duty foil, add butter and more than likely salt and pepper.Make sure it is not in the hottest part of the coals and keep turning it to keep it from burning. Also evrey once in awhile check to see if it is soft enough for what you like.

Sounds like you already know how. In fact, I'm firing up the grill this evening and might do it exactly as you said.

I get some big onions and slice them thick and lay them over the fire till they start to come apart then I put them in a small nonstick and add a tad of bbq sauce and heat them till they are real tender and serve them over hamburgers

I like to put grilled onions on hamburgers and hot dogs.

I slice an onion (red, yellow or white, whichever is your preference) into thin rings or strips, and separate them. Then I take a large rectangular piece of heavy foil (or a double layer of regular foil) and arrange the onions on one half of it. Top it with a few pats of butter, some pepper and some garlic powder. Fold it over and make about three folds on all four sides, to seal it. Place it on a hot grill four about five to seven minutes on each side. Be careful when you open it, the steam can burn you. But it's yummy in the tummy. :-)

Alternately, you can cut them into thicker strips or rings and lay them directly on the grill, basting them with the butter/garlic/pepper. It'll take less time, so take them off when they are browned.

GRILLED ONIONS

Peel onions, core the center about 1 inch down. Fill cavity with butter. Salt and pepper to taste. Wrap each onion in foil, careful not to spill butter. Place on grill and cook approximately 30 minutes. Size of onion will determine if longer or shorter time is needed on the grill.

Sounds like you remember the recipe already.
Given that years ago your father didn't have the option of the sweet onions that are in the market now, I think you can skip the butter if you want. In a deep bowl, combine a small amount of olive oil, salt, pepper and any other of your favorite herbs or seasoning. Take an entire onion, one per person if they are true onion lovers, remove the outer "skin". Next use a very sharp knife to make multiple deep slices into the onion without cutting through the core so that the veggie doesn't fall apart yet. Place in the olive oil dressing and spoon the mixture in to the openings of the onion. Wrap well in one to two layers of aluminum foil and voila! After cooking, the onion will fall apart, making it easier to serve and eat. This also works well with potatoes. Enjoy.
