Reheating rice in a microwave has possible effects that are harmful?
a friend has told me that reheating rice in a microwavecan lead to food poisoning. I can't see the connection if the rice was stored properly after cooking.
Answers:
re-heating anything in the micro-wave is always safe for all foods. As long as food is good before you heat it.....enjoy dat RICE! ;)
I've never heard of food poisoning from reheating rice in the micro. However, I've heard that reheating any food in plastic containers or plastic wrap can cause harmful chems in the plastic to enter the food.
I've never heard of such a thing...of course if you heat it in plastic or leave plastic wrap on it, that leaches into the food...but re-heating rice is no different that re-heating or cooking any other food.
Your right. If the rice was refridgerated properly and then reheated to a temperature of 75 degrees or above your fine.
i do not think that's true, my mom does that all the time and she is fine!!!
it's not true. Re-heating rice in the microwave is completely harmless. Otherwise Uncle Ben's would always get sued
Defrosting food and heating it is fine. But then reheating any kind of carbohydrates, such as pasta or rice is dangerous because bacteria enjoy growing in carbs because of the energy or something. Microwaving it is especially dangerous because it does not heat the food up enough to kill the bacteria and by this point the bacteria have divided at an unprecedented level.
Food poisoning is caused from bacteria that grow in food when it's left out. If the rice was stored properly and no bacteria were in it before you put it in the microwave, there certainly should be no problem afterwards. When you heat food long enough, so that it's heated throughout, microwaving will kill any preexisting bacteria, not produce it.
Whoever told your friend this was lying or misinformed.
"Microwaving it is especially dangerous because it does not heat the food up enough to kill the bacteria..."
This is not true. If you can boil water in the microwave, you can heat food up enough to kill bacteria. Perhaps your microwave is broken?
Reheating in a microwave any food has possible harmful effects because of the micron rays that heat the food, but that is an old rumor and most of us have been raised on microwave food without any effects. So as long as you have stored it properly, it should be fine.
But rice tends to dry out in reheating, try adding a spoon of water or something to have it really wet before and then cover the plate with one of those microwave covers that prevent splatters and it should come out nice and fluffy.
Enjoy!
PS. the problem with plastic and micros comes with greasy foods and red sauce's, not too much other items unless you over cook it. I usually avoid and just put it on a real plate/bowl.
