How do you make fondant 3d decorations???
I found a really cute picture of a jungle cake. I am throwing a baby shower for a family member and her theme is JUNGLE. I can pretty much figure out how the cake was made. The comments at the bottom of the pic said that the animals were made from fondant. I know how to make the fondant just clueless on how to make the 3d animals. Do I roll them into shape and then dye them?? Or do I dye them before I roll them?? Please help me.
Answers:
you can either add coloring to the fondant and knead it in or you can paint it on.
I have actually used both methods. I would color the fondant and then paint on top of it to create shading.
To actually make the animals it is just a series of rolled up balls. A small one for the head, a large oblong one for the body and 4 small ones for the legs. Now you can roll our snake shape for tales and for a trunk if you are making an elephant, For elephant ears just roll out one of the circles and shape it to an ear. It helps to look at the piture of the animal you want to create so you can form it better. Don't forget to blend the balls to each other so they don't roll off.
Anyway, there is a great site with pictures and details of other people who made that particular cake which may help you alot. Good Luck - See the resources below....

Make your figures then paint them with food dye pastes and a fine paint brush. Be careful not to overwet the icing. If the colour is a little strong it can be dulled down with a little icing sugar while the dye is still wet.
