Using a grill - should the grill door be kept open?!

Question:

Using a grill - should the grill door be kept open?

please help settle an arguement! Should the door be kept open when grilling or is it ok to close it?

Answers:
It depends on the make/model. Check the instructions. The grill in my current oven should be used with the door closed, but a previous one, had to be propped open.

It needs to be kept open!! I have never known anyone to close it. The fact that when you unfold/attach the handle to the grilling tray must be a clue that you cannot close it. I don't know why it has to be kept open, but it does!!

Definitely kept open.

always open!

Open!!

absoulutly closed even though you cant check its made keep it open or else it would take longer and all the heat will come out !

Open or closed is how you control the draft, thus the temps in the grill. At least partway open is what I do if you dont have some other way of getting a good draft.

yes...i dont know why but it should be open.

maybe Stephen Fry from QI has a huge explanation for it - i dont know.

You use it open ... move the grill pan up and down to regulate the temperature!

if you are cooking high temperature, searing the outside of your food item, leave the door open, this will concentrate the cooking action on the downward portion of the food, leaving the interior somewhat cool.

if you are trying to heat something all the way thru, leave the door closed and turn the temperature down.

close it

I think it depends on the type of grill it is. Generally, a gas controlled grill is designed to cook with the lid closed. Cooking with the lid-closed helps food retain natural juices, moisture, enhances flavor and keeps annoying flare-ups to a minimum. Closing the door also ensures that heat is distributed evenly and food is properly cooked. For those of us who are conscious of the environment, it also ensures that fuel is used more efficiently. It is also safety measure for household with young children. I have used my grill with the door closed for over 20 years.

It definately needs to be kept open!

well iyt depends upon if you want the handle to go all melty like, if you do then close the door, if not them leave it open...though if its the type of grill i think you wont be able to close the door with the handle attached so that should be a bit of a clue as to what to do

There are two types of electric grill. One that is always on and the door should be kept open.

The other cycles on and off depending upon oven temperature. The grill door should be closed for this type.

Check your oven instructions - it will confirm which applies.

It should be kept open

yes you must keep the door open,or the steam and heat will reck your food.

Either is fine, but if you keep the door close you must keep checking it

you can shut it but you will burn the house down like me

definitley leave open

look at the instructions my old oven you had to keep open but my present one you have to close!

You need to check the instructions for your grill - my last oven/grill said the door should always be kept partially open (it was a pull down door).
My current oven/grill, on the other hand says in no uncertain terms that it should be kept shut.
Both were electric, so its nothing to do with the type of power.

Thank you for asking that question! I never knew myself before.... then again looking at all those answers I'm still not entirely sure....!

open!!!

definantely open!
otherwise you have a very big chance of your food setting alight!!!!

p.s. be especially careful when grilling homemade burgers as these have a big tendancy to do this!
