Boston baked beans--Help!?!

Question:

Boston baked beans--Help!?

Ok I read all the questions people asked previously. But they don't help.

I took dried navy beans soaked overnight in cold water.
The recipes say it takes two hours to get them cooked.
My beans are like rocks and its been hours. This is the second recipe I tryed with the same results.
Why don't they get soft. Its been six and a half hours??? They are on a slow simmer.

Answers:
You don't even need to pre-soak the beans. The cooking time is not really fixed either - it can be 8 hours, or 12 hours, or even more. The longer it's cooked, the deeper the flavors become. The beans get softer and mushier of course, but mushy beans really taste great. (You may need to add some more water to avoid it turning into one lump, if you leave it cooking very long.) You could start this in your slow cooker or oven early in the morning, and come back to a house smelling like dinner.

One thing to try is not salting your water while the beans are cooking. Wait until they are cooked throughly as the salt keeps them from softening. Be sure after you have soaked the beans you start with fresh water. Good luck!

were they to old ?? they might be it i always get fresh ones from the store

Sorry I am not sure what is causing your beans not to cook.

If you are at a high altitude then you must turn up your fire a bit. Everything you boil or simmer at high altitude takes a lot longer. I lived at 8400 ft. for 3 yrs. and cooked everything like that in a pressure cooker. Anything over 4000 ft. is considered high altitude. If not, then I think your beans are old. Sometimes they are old when you buy them.
