Need help with cake topping/decoration!?!

Question:

Need help with cake topping/decoration!?

Hello. For a relative's birthday, we are going to make, I know, this sounds gross, but a "kitty-litter" cake. We are trying to think of grayish foods (like candies, cookies, breads, etc) that we could crush up and put ontop of the cake, to make it look like kitty-litter. Anyone got any ideas? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!

Answers:
oreos
cookies n cream bars
lickerish

That's just not right.

hmm....well you could crush up stones and put it on top, that would shock the guests! no one would forget that party that's for sure.

I hope your not expecting anyone to actually EAT that cake!

maybe with oreos I now they are black but maybe you can mix them with something else to make it look whiter or more gray

um a tootsie roll

I can't think of any gray foods, but I was thinking that maybe you could get some fondant and color it gray. Then throw that on there. With fondant, you can cut them to the exact pieces you want, or dry it out and crumble it up as you'd like...

oh oh oh...or you could use taro??? (the gray kind, not the purple asian kind)

Here, I found a recipe with a picture: http://www.fabulousfoods.com/recipes/des...

I made this cake when a customer ordered it for a relatives bday party. It was fun! Take a white cake mix and add a bit more flour to it to make it more crumbly. Get the cake into your cake pan and then add food coloring to the unbaked cake, mixing it in with a toothpick or knifetip. I used blues and greens and browns.

Let it bake and cool then crumble it up on top of your cake. This works really well and you don't have to worry with finding something else. And it's more cake - who won't like that?!?

My suggestion would actually be to try to find something that will crumble nicely that is white. I can't think of anything just now that would make quite the right effect (maybe you could crumble your icing that way if you make it thick enough), but anyway then you can go to a craft store like Michaels. They will have a Wilton cake decorating aisle (they will take you right to it if you ask) and you can buy the black color mist. It's in a spray can. If you use a light enough coat, I think you could make it look grey. You could also try to grocery store since some other companies make these spray in colors, but I don't know if they make black.

I've used chocolate that I've grated or chunked (dark, white, and milk). Put it in a plastic bag with powdered sugar and shake. I made a cake for a graduation where one of the school colors was grey and this worked nicely for texture.

Ohh...someone else's post made me think...what about nerds or mini M&M's? They make some in black and white.
