Can I use apple slices instead of pineapple for an upside down cake?!

Question:

Can I use apple slices instead of pineapple for an upside down cake?

I'm thinking if I cut really thick slices of apple it may work!

Answers:
Sure, I have used apples, pineapple, peaches (if tinned then drain the juice), even rhubarb is good. The apples will taste real good with a little cinnamon sprinkled on them and perhaps nutmeg also. But be real gentle with the nutmeg. Enjoy yourself. Hint: with a warm upside down cake if you turn it downside up on the plate some ice-cream really adds to it.

Yeah, it would work. It should have an apple pie consistency. I used peaches in place of the pineapples (trying to make a peach cobbler inspired upside down cake).

No..they don't have enough juice to soak into the cake...you might as well make apple cobbler than

What is even better is if you use some applesauce with it too.

I don't think it will work.

The pineapple caramelizes with the glaze and I can't think of a good substitute for it. Though you can use canned pineapple.

It won't come out as pretty when you turn it upside down. Pineapple slices retain their shape better and the color is attractive too. Apples tend to shrink when baked because they lose their moisture in the process.

Yes, you can, and you could also use pears or any other firm fruit.

I have done that in a pinch. Don't cut them too thick, though, they need to break down in cooking or they will remain raw apples and have an odd contrast. It will not be quite the same, as the pineapple is very moist and adds something to the brown sugar -- they make a kind of carmel sauce. I think pecan halves would be nice sprinkled over the apple.

Yea I would think that you could use any kind of fruit that you like. If I were using apples I would use Granny Smith apples and this would adda tartness to the cake and help with the sweetness.

try it.

Yes, cut thick slices also you'll need to use apple juice and boil it down to a syrup. like the syrup that comes in pineapple cans. and follow same directions.

Of course you can use them! The only thing is that apples don't have as much juice as the pinnaples, which help moisten the bread a little, and also the pinneaples get a nice crystal look after cooked, the apples won't. But it would be interesting cause they have a different flavor.. I'm sure it'll be ok :)

It's a classic French recipe called an AppleTarte Tatin

Yes. I'd add a bit of cinnamon to the brown sugar mix in the bottom of the pan, and put the sliced apples in pretty concentric rings.
