How do I make tortillas really soft and pliable?
When I go to a taqueria, they always take the tortilla and put it in a little steamer gizmo of sorts, and it comes out all soft and stretchy. How can I do this at home? Can I do with this pre-packaged ones?
Answers:
Simply wrap tortillas in moist paper towels and microwave for a few seconds until its hot enough for you. And you have steamed tortillas. Enjoy
get one for home.
around 125.00 for the steamer.
If you have a gas stove just put it on the flame for a minute or so on each side. Or put it in a nonstick pan and do the same.
When I am making burritos or soft tacos at home, I cook the meat in a frying pan. When I'm ready to steam the tortillas, I place one tortilla at a time over the meat for maybe twenty or thirty seconds.
You can also just put a few tablespoons of water in a frying pan, turn the heat on medium, and hold the tortillas over the frying pan with tongs or your hands. That'll work, too.
i agree with all the above methods, ours come in a microwave safe plastic pack and you cook them in the bag, which warms and steams slightly giving lovely soft tortillas. Old El Paso brand if u get it.
Never micro wave them, it makes them hard too quickly. I simply heat them on the stove then place them in between a clean linen cloth. This keeps them soft and pliable for you to use.
this is what i do....
i take a wide pot and put and inch or two of water in it. put it on the stove on med-high. then i take a cookie cooling rack and put it on top of the pot. then i put the tortillas on there to steam them. they never get rubbery hard (microwave) or too crusty and not pliable (straight on burner).
Take 1-3 tortillas and put them on a plate. Get 2-3 papertowels (folded together to make 1) and wet them with water. ring the papertowels out and place the wet paper towels over te tortillas and put them in the microwave for 30sec or so.
Works every time.
