Answers:
When I make cottage pie (like mince & potatoes but with mashed potatoes put on top of mince and browned off in the oven) from scratch I fry off chopped onions and mince, add diced carrots and/or swede, a little stock, pepper, dried herbs, and paprika / cayenne. To ring the changes, I occasionally add garlic, tomato puree or even a can of tomatoes. This mixture goes really well with mashed, boiled, or jacket potatoes, and if using tomatoes, try adding a little more liquid to make a bolognese sauce for pasta, or some kidney beans for chilli....

I babysat for a lady who made mince and potatoes! I hadn't thought about that in a long time. She cooked her potatoes in the pot along with the mince. She added the oxo cubes but that's about it. I had a get together yesterday and my husbands aunt and uncle brought us a package of fresh ground beef that they had from raising their own beef and now I know what I'm going to do with it! Your recipe sounds fantastic! Thanks to you and your nan's, I am going to try it!:o)

I thought your way was interesting and i really like the cottage pie idea. ive made it before.
this is somthing we do here .its more of a breakfast thing but ive used it for dinner before.
chop potatoes into small pieces like for hash.(aprox 1 large per person.begin to fry these with 1 chopped onion.
when soft.add the mince.and cook till done.
drain excess grease and add
1cup water with 2 beef cubes .salt and pepper
simmer till thick.
serve on a plate with 1 or 2 poached eggs on top.and toast.
peace><>

I always fry off the mince and onions in a little oil first as it gives a better taste and colour.
I add a teaspoon of curry powder, sprinkle with a table spoon of flour and stir for a couple of minutes and then add water or stock.
Let it bubble away for about 20 minutes, adding more water if necessary and stir from time to time.
