Question about beef stroganoff....?
I want to make beef stroganoff for dinner tonight. I've never made it before... I want dinner to be ready in about an hour and a half. The recipe calls for 1 pound of cubed beef stew meat and a can of mushroom soup. Is this meat the stew that comes in the can? and last but not least - can I cook the ingredients together on the stove for like an hour instead of using a crock pot because the crock pot calls for 5-8 hours. Thanks!

The meat is just pieces that you buy and they are actually called stew meat of stir-fry. The is usally a tougher grade of meat so you will want to cook it slowly. An hour should do on the stove. Check out the recipes below.

No the stew beef is a cut or type of packaged beef you get at market......and I dont know if you could do it from that recipe on the stove, but I am sure there are websites that you could find a stove top version.....

Beef Stroganoff
2 sticks of butter (real butter)
1-2 lbs. Flank Steak
1tsp. Garlic salt
3 small or 1 ? large onions cut into rings
1 lb. fresh mushrooms (sliced are the easiest)
2 cups chicken broth
1 pint of sour cream
2 cloves of garlic
1 lb. egg noodles

Cut steak into cubes (the larger the juicier). In large plastic bag, toss meat with ? cup flour and garlic salt. Brown floured meat with butter and remove. Brown mushrooms, onion and garlic cloves. Once onions are browned return meat and chicken broth. Cover and simmer for 2 ? hours. Check every 15 minutes, add water if needed. Once the water is gone, stir in sour cream.
Boil egg noodles, strain and add butter.
I believe that the beef stew meat that your recipe is referring to is a cut of meat, not from a can. You can use any boneless cut of beef. Cut it into cubes (or strips if you prefer), brown it in a skillet, then add your cream of mushroom. Don't forget the sour cream! Enjoy your meal :o)
The stew meat that the recipe is referring to is generally marked as such in the meat department. It's really just cubed pieces of beef that was trimmed off other cuts when the butcher was putting them together.
Yes, most definitely, you can cook them all together on the stove top. I highly recommend browning the meat before putting the other ingredients in, though. Also, if the recipe calls for sour cream (common in stroganoff but not always used), add this at the very last minute...it has a tendency to curdle when heated. Last but not least...if the recipe calls for adding noodles to the crock pot, I'd leave these out and boil them in a separate pot...the shorter cooking time may not allow for them to be cooked through.
Gross, gross, gross! If you must use Stew beef slice it into extremely thin strips and quick-sear them in an extremely hot frying pan. Use fresh mushrooms that you reduce until browned and brown some onions and a little garlic. Then deglaze the pan you've been using to brown all of the ingredients with a little white wine, throw in a bunch of sour cream and blend it with the juices you've made from the degalzing until it's thick. Fold the other ingredients back into the sauce and serve over a thick noodle or pasta. I can't think of anything worse than using a can of cream of mushroom soup and calling it a stroganoff.
