Answers:
First of all. you need to make sure you're not using the bad part of the asparagus. here's the best way to tell where to cut your asparagus at...

hold a bunch in your hand and hold at each end. bend backwards and where they begin to break at is where you should be cutting them. This can vary at different times during the season. as far as cooking you can braise, roast or steam. I like to cook mine until they're soft on the outside but still have a little resistance to them when i bite down. You don't want overcooked asparagus. you're not in england.

You can either steam it or roast it...first make sure you rinse it well, and either break off the woody bottoms, or shave the bottoms with a veggie peeler.
Place in a pan with an inch of water, put on a tight lid and bring to a boil...this takes about 5 minutes..longer depending on whether you still want it to have a little bite to it, or not.
To roast it, place on a baking sheet in a single layer, drizzle with olive oil, (you can add chopped garlic, too, if you like) sprinkle with salt and pepper and roast at 450 for about 10-12 minutes! (you can also sprinkle on a little parmesan at the last 2 minutes of cooking time.)
Enjoy!!

I steam mine until they are tender or you can boil them also til tender. Either way they will be good. Make sure you cut the purple ends off first.

I cook asparagus by place them in boiling water for 20 to 30 seconds for each pound (blanching vegetables). in a sautee pan place 1/4 cup of olive oil and three cloves of crushed garlic. stir the garlic in olive oil over medium heat till the garlic's moisture comes out(sweating garlic) then place asparagus in olive oil and crushed garlic cloves folding them while still over the heat till olive oil and garlic are evenly spread on each asparagus tip. salt and pepper to taste. if boilinig no more then 5-10 minutes. steaming no more then 20 minutes. over cook asparagus is mushy and nasty.
