What are some good, cheap and quick meals for poor college kids?
I need some basic food ideas for college kids on the go. Example: ramen
Answers:
buy a jar of spaghetti sauce and pasta. Just heat and eat, quick and cheap
hotdogs are always good with maybe some baked beans on the side or chips
sloppy joes, Hamburger meat, sloppy joe mix and buns. Quick cheap and easy
grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup
sandwiches are always a hit
omletes are fantastic. Mix up some eggs with a little milk, salt and pepper (use 2 eggs per person) You can put anything in an omlet, left over veggies, ham, potato, cheese, and it is fast, light, and cheap
Swanson makes a chicken ala king in a can in your grocery store that is fantastic served over toast, noodles, rice or mashed potatoes. if you cant find it you can make your own with a can of diced chicken, a can of cream of chicken soup, green pepper, mushrooms, and salt and pepper. heat all together.
Hot pockets are good with a cup of soup on the side
ramen soups. throw in some left over meat, veggies and you have a meal.
meatloaf: 1 pound ground meat, diced onion, diced green pepper, breadcrumbs, egg, pepper, salt, ketchup. Mix all together and make into a loaf pour more ketchup over the top and bake for about half an hour. You can even bake this in a small toaster oven or make them into patties and cook over the stove. After the patties are brown add some ketchup over the top and heat. You can serve this with a can of veggies and some instant mashed potatoes,
I hope these ideas help you

The healthiest and cheapest thing as a college student:
- Buy a large pack of pasta (dont buy a single serving one) - $2-4
- Buy a dozen eggs $2.99-3.50
Boil the pasta and add some ketchup and salt. Make the egg as sun side up and put it on the pasta. If you want add some cheese. If you are doing a take out then scramble egg.
Healthy and will give you energy.
boil a HUGE pot of pasta. or a few batches of different kinds.
make a pasta salad- salad dressing, oil and vinegar-whatever you like. add veggies, sliced lunch meat, olives, whatever.
depending on the size of your salad, it can last awhile.
keep remainder of cooked pasta in zip loc bags in the fridge. heat in microwave with your favorite sauces.
Spicy lentils and rice, or chickpea curry and rice.
Scrambled eggs and toast.
Spaghetti tossed with a little olive oil and sauteed onion, garlic and any fresh veggies you have around (broccoli is nice).
Baked potato topped with tuna and cheese or salsa and cheese.
Instead of simple ramen, you can buy dry pasta, beans, and rice on the cheap.
Toss some pasta with butter, a bit of parmesan, and some garlic (melt the butter and add a clove of diced up garlic into the butter while heating). It costs next to nothing and tastes great! Pastas can be bought for a buck easily for a package of about a pound on sale. Butter isn't too expensive and you won't use much. Garlic will cost about a buck too and you'll have a lot of garlic.
Cook a pot of rice and just throw in some veggies or make some fried rice if you've got some soy sauce, maybe some veggies, leftover chicken or whatever to dice up, an egg... Buy a package of tofu, pick out a sauce and stirfry up some diced tofu with veggies to put over rice. Trader Joe's has a lot of really good sauces premade and bottled that are cheap!
Beans... Kidney beans and other types of beans also cost next to nothing to buy. You can cook up a big pot of beans ($1-2), throw in a couple cans of tomato sauce ($2-4), some tomato paste, salt & pepper, get a couple hamhocks ($3) to cook with for flavor and just throw in maybe a little diced garlic/onion and cook. It can make a HUGE pot of tasty beans for around or under $10. You can split it up all week, freeze some for later, or share with a lot of people and everybody take turns cooking. You can make a big pot of food for a lot of people and then everybody take turns making meals. Then you get multiple meals for still around $10!
Meals that you need meats for are going to be more expensive, so the more you can stand eating meatless, the cheaper. If you're a vegetarian, even better!
1 packet of chicken ramen noodles per "kid"
1 can chicken breast meat per 2 "kids"
1/2 cup frozen mixed veg per "kid"
bring water to boil and add noodles only, open & drain can chicken into a bowl and add season packet to broth. When the noodles start to seperate add in the chicken &mixed veg. Mix the chicken broth & season packet so that seasoning disolves.
Drain all water off of the noodles/veg/chicken and pour the remaining broth & seasoning over noodles.
If you like sour cream...use one small container for every 2 people...add the season packet into the sour cream and mix together...once the noodles are done, drain off all liquid and add the sour cream mixture to the noodles
D2B are you seious??? this is a poor college kid that will not have the time to go shopping for a whole list, then read a reciepe on how to make it and have all the mixers and cups it takes to make
just go to your local grocery store and get microwave meals, most are $1.00 or maybe $1.25... Michelina's is usually pretty good.. but don't get anything that you might think that you wouldn't like, 99% of the time you're not going to like it
Here's a budget site with a whole list of recipes using ramen:
